Hi. I'm trying to choose between a JD 2030 (with a loader) or an IH 784 without a loader. The prices and hours are close between the two. Does anyone have any thoughts?
Thanks

Well, thanks everyone for the great comments and thoughts. I just got back from a 2.5 hour trip to the JD dealership to look at the 2030. Unfortunately, he grossly overstated the quality of the tractor. As soon as I got there I saw that there was a large puddle of hydraulic fluid under the engine, not good. Then I grabbed the steering wheel and was able to turn it almost 180 degrees with no response, loose would be an understatement. Then we started it up and was nearly showered with fluid. Not that it matters that much to me, but it had also been left out and was severly rusted. Needless to say, I left not feeling too good about the wasted drive. BUT, because I was down that way anyhow I decided to stop at another dealership and low and behold what do I find...a mint condition JD 1020 with loader, 1200 original hours, kept in the barn all of its life, for around the same money as the 2030! I am going to talk to my finance guy tomorrow!!

Thanks,
Brian

if i were you, i would check how you will be using these two machines, then see if the loader will be something good to have. personally, i wouldnt buy a smaller tractor without a loader. from what ive seen, the john deere will also be better about mantanince. farmweld

My heart says to buy the IH, but my brain says to buy the one that seems to be in the best shape and best suits your needs. Sit in the seats of each, run them a little and see which feels most comfortable to you, different folks like different things for sometimes unexplainable reasons.
Don't forget to consider which will be easiest to get parts and service for locally, doesn't matter who made the tractor, sooner or later it'll need something done to it.

A Deere with a loader for close to the price of another without ?? Don't waste anymore time at the computer and go get that Deere before someone else does. If you don't need the loader sell it off and make some money.

I'm not much of an authority on red tractors, but that green one is a good one. Or at least it should be. I've got a 2440 which is just an updated 2030 (60 hp, 219 cu in wet sleeve diesel) It has great hydraulics, great hp to weight ratio. Like it has been noted, check to see if the coolant has been maintained. If it gets acidic, and there happens to be ANY dirt in the coolant, it will eat holes in the cylinder sleeves. ANY wet sleeve diesel will do that. The 146 Deere loader is a good, sturdy loader. (By the way!!! I'm shopping for one....hint) John

Hi Brian,

Might have to flip a coin on that one 'cause they are both nice little utility rigs.

How good is the loader on the John?

Allan,

It"s a 146 in good shape. I"ve only seen pics so far but will try and go look at it today or tomorrow.

Also, both of these tractors have between 3 and 4000 hours, do you think there"s anything in particular I should be concerned about or look for with those kinds of hours?

My brother-inlaw had a Deere and there was also a 574 IH (gas) in the family at the same time. We liked the left hand gear shift on the IH when using a loader. One thing you need to watch on both of them as it can happen to any wet sleeve engine. Check the PH of the antifreeze, They had to put new sleeves and pistons in the IH before it came to our house. I have also seen Deeres with the same problem. Which one has the better dealer in your area? The one we have is a diesel. I do not know where you are, but a block heater might be a good investment. We have one on all the tractors now.

Brian,

I'd only be most concerned about the engines at those kinds of hours.

If they are diesels, not to worry. But gassers ususally need an overhaul when they crowd 5,000 hours.

Also, does that IH have a T/A? Another thing to think about because they have a nasty way of spending your money without asking.

Dunno, just my input,

Allan

Allan,
Both are diesels. Pardon my ignorance, what's a T/A?
Thanks

Couple years ago I plowed 8 acres, broke the plow, got 2 flat rear tires, and the hydraulics acted up.

My wife plowed the rest of the plow ground, 10 times what I did, & I only added fuel & lube.

Of course, now she has a yearly job..... ;)

LOL! Men are hard on equipment. If you didn't get so psyched up and try to run in road gear all the time, maybe ya wouldn't shell out the equipment every spring! :o)

Trouble is, plowing (along with stacking hay bales on the open hayrack in the field) was some of my favorite work on the farm.

If you check the haybasket thread above, I'm giving up all my favorite chores! :)

Brian,

No, it is I who has to deal with the 'ignorance issue' 'cause I just do not have a need for a utility tractor, nor have I ever been within 100 yards of one.

But many of the IH row crops use a Torque Ampflier in the gear drive models to provide more of a power range to the transmission. The tractor will have a "hi/low" range selector lever.

The TA was standard equipment on the 84 series. To get one with out a TA was a special order.

We use a 584, to my knowledge the 584, 684, 784 shared the tranny / housing / axles. It is a rugged machine but ours has many hours.

The shifter has been broken off and poorly repaired so it frequently loses sync and jams.

The parking brake bands never work on them.
