Where I'm from(NW ND) single front wheels were almost unheard of. Now, a few collectors are adding them to their lineups. I have one question. The forks on these machines don't look very sturdy. Could they support as much weight as a double front, or a wide front?
Thanks.

Out in irrigated furrow areas you see mostly wide fronts and singles. The narrow front doesn't fit down in the furrow or 'mark'.

MJ,

Yep, those tricycles look pretty strange to you and I, don't they? :>)

Terrible rough things to ride and drive. The single wheel front end bobbing up and down rocks you forwards and backwards with a jolt all day. No wonder the Rollo-Matic dual front tricycle was such a success. Around here only the small Waterloo two cylinders were tricycle. The Dubuques,med/large and every diesel Waterloo were not rowcrops but a Standard Chassis. Only ever seen one tricycle New Generation. It's a tired looking 4020 with some sort of mounted planter or scuffler on a market crop farm.

HS,

I've only been around the John Deere and IH single fronts, which are far stronger than a wide.

With extremly heavy loads, tires are an issue tho; even at a 14 ply rating.

Just curious - How would you get a heavy load on the front short using loader? A loader on a tricycle has got to be a fairly moronic idea anyway.

The only problem with a front ennd loader on a tricycle is the operator has to know what he is doing. The main reason loaders are on wide front tractors now is operators who do not know enough to operate a tractor without 'training wheels'. We have used a loader on our SM since new in 53 and have even used it to rebuild the dams on ponds with no problem. Difference in farm people and wannttobe farm people.

A narrow front tractor can be used safely with a loader. The operator just has to be more careful. Our JD 630 with a loader had a narrow front until I became tired or the front wheels balling up in the muddy cattle yard. When I put the wide front on it the way the tractor handled changed a lot. It seems like the way the tractor swayed with the loader up, was changed from a kind of rolling motion to a sideways motion. It saved the tractor from going over on it's side once when I was carrying a long tree limb high off the ground on a side slope(dumb) and the left rear wheel came off the ground. I was ready to bail off when the wide front hit the stop and the tractor just sat there with the wheel off the ground. It was one of those memorable moments in my life.

OTB,

Well, there are two sides to every coin and there are loaders and then there are loaders.

Ever have two ton of heavy alfalfa hay loaded in a 14' sweep head up 25 feet in the air with one of these rascals?

Call 'em "training wheels" if ya like, but I call the wide fronts just plain good common sense.

No I have never used a sweep head for hay, but I have loaded round bales 2 high on a semi with our superM and prefer the tricycle over the wide front. It also makes it a lot easier to haul tractors to pulls and shows being able to stack them on trailer. The whole thing is the operator has to be good to use a loader with narrow front tractors.

Early loaders were almost exclusively used for loading manure. A tricycle was much easier to use in a barn than a wide front. The manure forks were only about 40 inches wide and it would have been difficult to get the manure away from the walls with a wide front end. When I worked for Allis Chalmers we always used a D-17 demonstrator with a tricycle front end as a yard tractor. I had an IHC M with a midwest manure loader .It was a fine piece of equipment. Also had an AC Wd with Freeman loader also great. Now have two IHC with wide front and loaders but do not load manure. APPARENTLY YOU NEVER LOADED MANURE!

Just for your information, a lot of narrow front tractors have loaders on them in this part of the world. In fact, years ago, wide fronts were rare excedpt for utility type tractors, at least in this area.
