friend has a chance to buy a JD 8630, w/new radial tires, 1000 hrs on new 50 series 619, new rear end & power shift. But the tractor jumps out of B & C ranges, with increasing frequency. what could that be??
Are the 619 good motors? What about the rest of the drivetrain? Hydraulics? Axles? centerpivot? Is this a good tractor and what would you look for and be leary of about them? I am not too familiar with the green stuff? Thanks for any advice or opinions.

Depends on how they were used, type of terrain and who was driving. Sounds like those prices were Deere shop bills for the entire job. The 466 engine road ok in that tractor frame. However the 531/619 ended up being a stressed structual member part of the frame. Seems the engine engineers and chassis engineers didn't get together on that one. Gaskets don't seal worth a darn as the engine is twisted back and forth along it's entire length all day. Not good for the crank, bearing and main block webs when they are turning while not being inline. The 531/619 in other applications was considered a pretty stout engine.

The one reason they are cheap is they are old. Another reason is you can put a lot of money into them real fast. My neighbor's 8630 got a new water pump for $1000, a new oil cooler for $1000, a new turbo for $850, the injection pump was rebuilt for $3000 and that was before the engine was overhauled for somewhere around $10000. Now, two years later the head gasket is blown. They bought it new and it has given them 14000 hours of service but it has been far from trouble-free sevice. If the one your friend is looking at is jumping out of gear, maybe he should look for something else. He could get more money in the tranny than the tractor is worth and he will still have an engine that is not known for lasting very long.

I don't know much about this tractor but I do know you can buy them cheap, there are plenty of them for sale and that may be an indication of problems they have.....
