EVER USE BLACK PEPPER FOR STOP LEAK? WORKS GREAT. JUST A COUPLE OF TABESPOONS FULL WILL STOP A PRETTY GOOD LEAK, AND WILL NOT HARM THE COOLING SYSTEM. A LOT CHEAPER , TOO.

We used to use horse manure in Model T Fords.

I've seen it done with a fire truck. The fan went thru the radiator and left a hole you could throw a Cat thru. We were driving it to the manufacturer to get it refurbished, when it threw the fan. The fireman driving it pinched the tubes together at the edge of the hole and then threw in a half-pound of ground pepper, then filled it back up, and it held up fine for the two hours it took to finish the journey. Wouldn't have beleived it if I wasnt there in person to see it. Now I'm a believer. OF course, now we had to add a radiator and a new water pump shaft to the rehab bill.

When we were to busy to tear one apart to fix a leaky one we would use about a 1/2 dozen eggs and a box of peppers it works.

As for the fans of the quick temporary fix that ends up being a "permanent" repair. I hope they do not work in the medical, aviation, chemical, petrochemical, elevator/crane, marine or nuclear industries.

Think about this though..... ..... .....

If black pepper will last in your radiator for years with out dissolving imagine what that hunk of it looks like in the bottom of your tummy after years of pilling it on your food.

One fellow ran a stick through this radiator and needed to keep working. He used Liquid Nails on the hole with good results. General Motors has a coolant sealant which contains ginger and tumeric among other common ingredients.

The reason is pretty simple- its a fairly harmless remedy, if done in proper moderation, and a tablespoon of black pepper is quite a bit cheaper, and more convenient, than spending several hours and several hundred dollars "doing it right". If it doesn't work, there's still the option of "doing it right".

I do understand the quick fix idea and the saving money idea,I guess I was just raised to do a job right! We have been fortunate enough to have and buy equipment that was easily fixed without pulling it down to nothing to work on it or repair it.There was also down time tha tour equipment was sitting idle, and thats when we tok the time to do maintence on them and fix what needed fixing then instead of putting off just because it "wasnt doing it"anymore.Been bit one too many times by BLACK PEPPER fixer uppers!

A good reason to take the easy way out is a small leak in the radiator in the 4440 in the middle of corn planting. I peppered it and haven't had any problem since. That was in 2000

It's one of those things where either you need it now, can't afford a new one or find a shop to fix it when you need it, or it's always had a slow leak that took a long time to lose a little bit. I know I sure wouldn't want to take a radiator out of a tractor that only has a small leak in it. On any tractor you have to take off almost all of the sheet metal, air cleaner or anything else that may be in the way. If I was in there all ready, then maybe I would take it out, but not if I didn't have to.

Frank: Have used the black pepper many times over the years, never really had a failure with it either. Like Averyman said some of the pepper fixes went for years rather than just a quick fix to get you home. One of the first times I ever used it, my dad had a new Chevy dump truck with 366 engine. Turning on some crushed stone front tire flipped a crushed stone, made a hole in rad, size of a lead pencil. My dad and I were both skeptical on that one, but in an isolated area we didn't have a lot of choice. Pepper stopped the leak and 100,000 miles later it was still holding. That made me a believer.

Frank,

Pepper may be cheap , but cleaning the heater hoses,
cleaning or replacing the heater core isn't.
Looking at that from the mechanics side , I do not
want it near a vehicle. have blown out the heater
hoses because the idiot put in the pepper and then
had no heat , what came out of the hose looked like several dogs squatted there,

yes george but that person apparently never heard of everything in moderation and the other thing how is it that people just happen to have black pepper in the middle of nowhere.....

ps won't work on two cylinders that don't have water pumps

THE FIRST TIME I TRIED IT AFTER HEARING ABOUT IT WAS ON MY NAA FORD. A WRENCH I WAS USING FELL INTO THE FAN AND INTO THE RADIATOR. NEEDLESS TO SAY THERE WAS A SIZABLE HOLE. I PUT IN A COUPLE OF TABLESPOONS AND THAT HAS BEEN ABOUT FIVE YEARS AGO. STILL GOING STRONG.
