OT, Saturn with shifting problem

Hope all of you knowledgable people can give me a little insight into my problem.

I have a 95' Saturn (GM sedan) that gets me to and from work economically and relaiably.
It has 164K miles on it now, and has a 5-speed manual transmission with a
hydraulic clutch. In November of last year
I had a transmission shop install a new clutch.
Everything went very well since then, but recently
I have been having trouble moving the shifter
into the slot of the selected gear. The shifter
resists entering the gear, but there is no grinding. It is very noticable, for instance,
when slowing down at a corner and trying to shift down into "second". "Second" seems to be giving me the most trouble. The problem is not so noticable on the upshift. More recently
I have noticed other gears are just as difficult
to shift into. My Hanes manual says the hydraulic
system is sealed so there is no option to bleed the clutch hydraulics (thought there might be air
in the system)

Anyway, I was wondering if someone could give
me some help understanding the problem before
I return to the transmission shop.

Best regards,

Tim, Ohio

I also have a 95 and have had the same problem. The transmission is shifted via cables. If you look down low on the right side of the transmission where the cables tie in to the shift levers you will see a slot and ball kind of setup. This is open and when it gets dirty and dry it hangs up and gets stiff. On the one I have I took a finger full of chassis grease and worked in there and worked the shift lever around a little and it freed right up. The dealer told me that it needed new cables and it would cost $250 to fix. Well let’s see, I greased it two years ago and it is still working fine.
165,000 miles and going strong.

I am not a transmission expert but...I have a 2002 saturn SL1. The transmission shifts like *rap until it is warmed up, the fluid is too cold. But I have heard of many problems with Saturn transmissions, lots of warranty problems. My advice is to change fluid in the whole trans. and then if it still is bad then maybe get another car, 164K miles is a lot of miles.

MR,

I have had this car since it was new. I am one of the lucky ones. I have had no problems
except for the following:
-wearables a given (tires, brakes etc.)
-started burning oil at about 60K miles
-new plugs every 35K or starts to run rough
-new egr valve about 110K
-just last week, I put a new radiator in it, end of the damn things are plastic. They age and then crack (9 1/2 years old)
-new thermostat about 130K

One thing to keep your eye on is the temperature
gauge. Have you ever noticed the temp goes nearly
into the red zone before the fan kicks in. I brought this to the attention of the dealer and they claimed it was performing properly. I think
this is why my rings are burned and it is using so much oil. After I discovered the problem I found that turning on the AC would bring the fan
on to cool things down. The funny thing is that once I put a coolant thermometer in it, the fan comes on sooner, about when the gauge is a little above half, not in the red zone as before.

Anyway, I cannot complain. This has been a better
than normal car. It still gets 40 mpg in the summer months. I just hope to get it to 200K
before I give it up.

Best of luck with yours.
