seized engine?????

started warming my tractor monday and it started to sputter a few times & it stopped. went to start it & alli got was a click. had the pos. cable checked & it pulled 600 amps. checked the starter & found the solenid was bad. had it replaced & reinstalled the starter, same thing just clicked. checked the oil & its a muddy grey. question engine seized?????. if so whats next? bill

Could be hydrostatic lock. If it's a gasser pull the plugs and see if it will turn.If it's a diesel pull the glow plugs if it has them or the injectors . Either way you have a problem with water in the oil.

Grey oil is an indication of the engine having run with water or coolant (anti-freeze) in the oil. However, probably the most common cause of your symptoms is a jammed starter. If it is only a jammed starter it can usually be relieved by putting the tractor in high gear and rocking the tractor back and forth. If this does not unjam the starter the next step would be to remove the starter and try to turn the engine by prying on the teeth of the ring gear. This should not take a lot of force and should be accomplished with a stout screwdriver. If you cannot then turn the engine it is an indication that the engine is seized.

Now back to the grey oil. As I said, grey oil is an indication of water or coolant in the oil. Water in the oil is not good for an engine and if there is enough of it will take out bearings. If it is anti-freeze in the oil it is worse and will take out the bearings much quicker. Water and particlarly anti-freeze will not stick to the bearing surface and will prevent the oil also from sticking to the bearing surface hence a lack of lubrication and the bearings become tight (too brief and explanation but you have the idea). I think if it is seized due to this situation you would have noticed the engine labouring (running like it had a load) in the minute or two before it stopped.

In any case you need to get that old grey oil out of there and replace it with new before you try to run it again. I say you go about this in the order I have suggested because the starter situation is the easiest to check out first. I would suggest that if you get the engine running again that you then drain out about half of the new oil and replace that half with diesel fuel and run the engine a few minutes to flush it of all the crud that has developed from the grey oil. Then drain the oil and diesel mixture and replace again with new oil. You should then check your oil frequently for the next while to make sure it does not go grey again. If it does, there is probably coolant getting into the oil and that needs to be fixed.

A "click" means the solenoid is OK and the starter or starter drive is bad. I'd suspect the starter brushes.

If you really think it's seized, try to spin the engine over using a socket and breaker bar on the crank pulley bolt. On some small tractors, you can use a screwdriver and pry against the flywheel teeth. All depends of which one is easiest to get at.

The oil condition sounds like water in the oil, maybe just lack of regular oil changes, maybe something much more serious.

Help us out with a little data. What tractor brand model and year? Deisel or gas? How long owned by you? What kind of oil do you use? How long since oil change? How had the tractor engine been running just before this problem? Did you try to turn the flywheel with a screwdriver?

its a case/ih 385, 1991. has about 650 hrs on it & its a diesel. ive had it about 6 yrs. have changed the oil 3 times since i have it. i use oil for diesel engines. im gonna try turning the fly wheel if it dont move ill pull the oil pan. thanks a lot for your help. bill

Drop the oil pan and clean off the crankshaft / rods / mains with brake cleaner. Look for discolored [ blue ] on rod caps , main caps , or crank shaft. If no discoloration start pulling rod caps [ keep 'em in order for reassembly ]. If no rod bearings are turned or stuck go to the main bearing caps and look for a bad bearing there. How'd the oil turn gray?? cylinder liner leaking coolant into crankcase ?? Sounds to me like a good candidate for an overhaul...

Sounds like the bushing in your starter has allowed the armature to ground against the outer winding.
