Hydraulic valve problem

I have a valve that's hard to move intially in either direction. Once it's moved by force in one direction it moves freely in that direction. Then to go in the other direction force is needed, then it moves freely in that direction.

It seems like it hangs in the center position. I've checked the linkage and that doesn't seem to be the problem.

This valve is in the middle of a bank of valves. Any help is appreciated.

After taking the sheet metal off for a closer look, it turns out the swivel shaft the lever is mounted on was binding in the mount.

You have eliminated the linkage as a cause. Next, remove the centering spring housing to see if the cause is there. That valve section should have no detent, just a centering spring. If that does not show the cause, it will be a problem with the spool itself or the valve section body.

OK, can you explain what it is and how to remove the centering spring housing? And can it be done without removing the bank of valves?

Thanks

For me you would need to be a little more descriptive. What brand and model of valve are we talking about? Does it have a detent? Particles (contaminates) may also have scored the valve housing causing it to move with increase difficulty? Are you planning on taking that section out and checking it? With just the spool in the housing it should fall very slowly by its own weight (spooled lightly oiled)

Thanks for all the comments.

The valve in question is the swing valve on a Ford 555B backhoe. It has this problem each time the lever is moved to change direction of the boom. Once the initial hard spot is overcome it moves freely in that direction even after letting off the lever. If you go in the other direction you encounter the hard spot again.

I bought the hoe knowing of this problem. I was hoping for a linkage problem, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

Thanks!

Could be internal leakage in the valve body. Fluid leaks into the outer ends of the valve shuttle. When you move the valve, it forces this extra leaked fluid back into the system and allows free movement it that direction. Then the same for the other direction. When you let the valve set for awhile, the fluid leaks back into the ends and valve movement becomes difficult again.

The only thing that comes to my mind is a sticky detent. Usually a detent gets looser with age instead of tighter unless maybe the detent is a plunger type and the plunger is cocking a bit and binding. Maybe someone who has worked with valves a lot has a better idea.
