Look. Any time you spend money, it ends up being converted to energy somewhere down the line. A good way to compare prices then and now, is by the equivalent gallons of gas it would have cost. (somehow considering gas tax). I think gas in 1960 was about 15 cents a gallon before tax. My Dad's 1960 pickup was $2000 outright. That's 13,000 gallons. Today that much gas would be about $20,000 + tax. He partly paid for the truck by milking 12 cows. However, it takes more gallons of milk today. (He had other farm income besides)

You can buy a half-dozen good used tractors (I'm partial to Olivers) for what most modern junk costs and have much better tractors.

yup Allan, the times they are a changin' Who'a ever thunk it 30 years ago? I still remember my first pickup truck, $2150 right off the showroom floor. And I was working for $1.65 an hour. A year or two later I was drawing $3.15 and that was top wage in the shop.

Boy, I guess.

The first "paying" job I ever had was when I plowed for my uncle using his 70 JD and a two bottom plow. Cold, blustry March and I was totally miserable.

Got paid $23 for three days and thought I was a rich man. :>)

Then again, one of my dad's hired men, of years ago, lives up the road from me a ways. I remember dad used to pay him $100 a month and gave him a house to live in.

He now has his current house & 5 acres of vertical rock for sale at $400K. Yep, times have changed. :>)

Dang, y'all make me feel old; when I was first old enough to drive a tractor (and do other farm work.....early '50s), going rate was $3.00 PER DAY..... .for 10 hours; of course, I didn't get that; as long as I put my feet under my Dad's table, that was all the pay I could expect.

Hey Rau!

Me too. Well, $19 including the darned court costs.

My dad went with me to pay the ticket. He told the JP that if this should ever happen agian, don't bother giving the kid a ticket. Just throw him in jail.

I didn't speed anymore,

Allan

So at $1,65 an hour you would have worked 1,303 hours to pay for that truck. Any one want to do the math and see how that compares to today?

Well, if you bought a new truck today at say $25,000 you would need to be making at least $19.18 per hour to be at the same rate.

$19.18 x 40 hours is roughly $40,000 per year income

So you need to be making $40,000 now to be able to afford the truck at the same ratio as you did back then.

$1.65 x 40 hours is $3,432 per year.

That is still a lot of money for a vehicle in either example.

I just priced a new Ford F-250. Sticker is $33,000.00. Around here we get about $20.00 an hour. So if I paid sticker I would work 1650 hours to pay it off. Not to far from where it was back then, especially after you talk the dealer down a little.

Yes, and look what you are getting. My 2005 truck is certainly a lot better vehicle than my 1976, plus it has so many more features. So you can't just compare wages and price, you also have to compare 1975 truck to 2005 truck.

I agree. The 2005 truck is an absolute bargain in safety, fuel efficiency and comfort compaired to the 1970 truck at the same price adjusted for inflation. Oh, yes the yearning for the good old days. Why not just roll the clock back 100 years before unions, improved working condiitons, weekends off, indoor plumbing, electricity and modern health care. Look at the Deere replacememnt for the 4020, the 6604 or 6606 ( if memeory serves). Look at the price figuring inflation or even the price of beef, pork, milk etc. Safer, much more fuel efficient and more productive per HP with 4WD. With options undreamed of in 1964 to 1972.

Don't know how we got off on truck prices, BUT I would gladly have my old Dodge Job Rated 3/4 ton 1956 truck for the $600.00 I paid for it back then than any of todays trucks for thier prices. Also those 70's Ford tractors were real bargins but we didn't know it at the time.

I've spent more fixing older vehicles than what paying for new ones would have cost. When done repairing an old vehicle, all that you have left is bills to pay and an old vehicle. For five years I've been stuck with incompetent high school dropouts who got an auto apprenticeship. Errors made were…. Over torqued fuel injector body and split it. New replacement injector internal valve stuck wide open. Too long a bolt in the rear main/oil pump, pushed the main bearing into the crank. The balancer shaft had a late roller bearing installed in the early block and the oil holes didn't line up. The cam sprocket was installed without the bushing and timing was grossly advanced at least 12+ degrees. The heads were machined for guide plates for the adjustable rocker arms. They took too much metal off and the adjustment lock nuts could not tighten. So they just ground the bottom off the lock nut to gain adjustment. Then they reused these locknuts over at every rebuild even though I supplied shorter push rods to compensate for new nuts could be used. Valve lash kept working loose and valve train would get noisy. The 3rd engine was dropped and busted the distributor but they stuck it in there and said nothing. They also broke the windshield, heater/AC housing and a body trim piece. To finish it off the test run consisted of a low gear, foot on the floor sprint just to see how many rpms she would make. That mashed the valve springs which caused a hard to find mid+ rpm miss. Who would ever expect to look for that? Also forgot, the engine over heated due to a plugged cat converter which had been saturated when the broke fuel body was spraying raw unmetered fuel into the intake manifold. Had to remove and machine square the intake manifold as it warped/leaked coolant.
