Couple questions about a 730D I"m thinking of buying.Seller says tractor is totally original(early model). This 730 has a round tube wide front end, anyone ever see one come like that? Also the 730 Diesel decal on the hood is down where the 720"s decal was not up at the top where it should be,was this a peculiarity with the first 730"s or did someone on the line put it in the wrong spot.

Decal placement and style of widefront are minimal things to worry about. The diesel 720/730's are notorious for having the flywheel work itself loose on the crank and damage the splines. Make sure you hear it run and listen for any knocking above the normal knocking sound a diesel makes. Have the seller remove the flywheel cover so that you can inspect the flywheel and make sure someone didn't weld the flywheel to the crank. To have to replace a bad flywheel with a taper lok flywheel and repair a damaged crank are big ticket items. It pays to check. Buyer beware. Good Luck.

The flywheels were OK if the operator followed the service manual and retorqued the flywheel with a torque wrench. The trouble often started shortly after an engine rebuild or an end play adjustment. Too little and she will shake loose. Too much and the bolt threads stretch and clamping power is lost. By guess and by golley with a piece of pipe on the end of a breaker bar is sure trouble. To use a torque wrench just weld up an off set from an old wrench and socket. Any time when working on those flywheels toss the old fasteners away. New grade 8 bolts, hardened washers and tall grade 8 nuts. 275 -300 lb ft oil with cam assembly lube. Or 350-375lb ft clean and dry.

The "round tube wfe" is the one that first appeared on ABG tractors, and was continued until the appearance of the Diesel 70, as a 1955 model, in 1954. The square tube wfe was introduced at that time, and in order to use up remaining stocks, or, as a dealer installed option, the round tube wfe and the square tube wfe were sold, side by side, until stocks were exhausted. By the introduction of the 20 series, the only round tube wfe still being sold were on dealer modified tractors, using dealer owned stocks of wfe. By the time the 730 appeared, very very few round tube wfe were left, and the superior advantages of the square tube wfe were well known!

The location of the 730 decal indicates that the tractor was repainted and redecaled at least once, by someone who had no idea about where to put the decal. As noted, the 20 and 30 series Waterloo two cylinders all used very large yellow decals. Those decals already had the green JOHN DEERE letters already properly positioned, as well as the words DIESEL (if it was a diesel) and the model indicator. Due to this fact, it is simply not possible to find a "factory original" tractor with the model designator in the wrong place.

If it is original the sides of the hood where it is yellow on the 20 and 30 series should by now be faded to a white color. This whole area was originally one great big decal stuck on the side of the hood and the grille. The 730 would have been up towards the top.Sounds like it was repainted. I have no clue on those wide front ends most all in my area had narrow fronts. Those front ends are easily changed around. No reason it couldn't have been delivered new with a new round front some dealer had laying around. No way to know for sure.
