I"ve been turning the idea of putting a different engine in my Oliver Super 88 over in my head for a few days now, since I don"t have money to rebuild the original engine, but I do have a few old engines lying around that I could put in.

What I"m wondering is, how do you do it? If anyone has pictures of how they did theirs, or could describe it, I"d really appreciate it. I guess I"m just not sure how to make the clutch and flywheel work together and details like that.

I"m not planning on using this thing for work--just a fun project and a toy, so engine speed and governing shouldn"t be a huge problem.

Thanks in advance,

Nathan in MN

The Oliver should be one of the easier ones because you have a stout frame and don't need to stress the engine. You can get clutch plates custom made to fit your tractor spline. You can probably get pilot bearings to fit the end of your transmission shaft. The distances involved are fairly set by SAE standards. Starter position is a potential problem. YOu should get a governor from something like a Versatile swather motor. Or use a diesel. I think you can backfit a Cummins. Several tractors used Chrysler 6's. Some used Continental 6's such as used by Kaiser Jeep, Willys, and Checker Cab. Several combines used the Chevy Six. Quite a few people are fitting old Fords with Ford sixes and V8s. The longer the stroke relative to the bore, the more tractor-like the engine. You want high torque, low rpm. Long stroke engines include Hudsons, Studebakers, and older Jeeps. Some years ago there was a picture on the net of someone who had put a Jeep engine in his Farmall. You might find it.
