I need a 350 chevy motor, around 1982. The motor I removed is a 4 bolt main bearing. It seams the 4 bolt block is a little hard to find, a lot of places have the 2 bolt main blocks. If I get a 2 bolt main block, will this fall apart in a short time? Not heavy pulling involved. The motor removed is no good, was run out of oil (not by me) and broke the crank, and spun a main. Thanks for any help. Stan

Check with your local GM dealer and look at a target master this is a GM rebuild with warranty and they have the HD 350s with 4 bolt mains and they are not priced that bad.

Yes,I just saw a buddy of mine this morning .He is heavily involved in stock car racing.I had mentioned this post.He said to tell you about the Targetmaster. You buy these new from Chevy. The price isnt too bad.He also said the four bolt main block has more iron in it than the two bolt.Furthermore a two bolt will be fine for more horsepower also.Just another motorheads opinion for your consideration.

I live near San Diego County in Aguanga. As for your engine, you have many options. You could have your block rebuilt at Waynes Engine Rebuilding in Riverside or go to Auto Zone and get rebuilt long block. A new 4 bolt is about $700.00 plus shipping from Summit Racing or Scoggins Dickey. ATK sells good long blocks. If your block is junk then you can get 4 bolt from any of the above, short block, long block, or complete engine. There is no shortage of 4 bolts whcih would be recommended for a truck. Also, you can get 4 bolt, new or used from PAW whcih I believe stands for Pacific Automotive Warehouse in Los Angeles area. Look in your phone book for machine shops and call them if you want to stay in San Diego area.

So YOU'RE the one that lives in Aguanga. I always just considered it a wide spot in the road, kind of a signal that my turn onto 371 was coming up. Bet it's pretty out there now with all the rain you been having. We live in Washington, but have a little place in the mountains just south of Palm Desert that we vacation in. Daughter lives in Escondido, so we go past Aguanga quite often.

This really isn't a answer to your question...but it's a good reason for me to remember the "good old days".
Back 35 years ago, when I and some friends were racing open wheeled modifieds on the dirt tracks, we always ran small block Chevies. Would start out with a plain old 283...bore it out .040...put in a Racer Brown Cam...add some F.I. heads...aluminum intake w/ 750 Holley...dual point distributor...and then take it to the tracks, and run it wide open. We never did have a problem with the bottom end. I don't think you will either.

Unless you plan on running alot of nitrous or alot of boost from a supercharger you don't need a 4 bolt main block.
most of the sports cars out there are running 2 bolt mains blocks, and look how hard some people pound on them.

The 350 4 bolt came out with factory 4 barrel and was used in trucks and some muscle cars. A 350 2 bolt is also just as good of an engine but not likely to have a 4 barrel stock that is.

Yes Chief I was going to shutup for once but how many times have you heard of a two bolt main motor rip out the mains. Also this is probably the worlds most popular powerplant it cant be that scarce in a four bolt. Finally if you desire there is a means to put four bolt aftermarket caps on the two bolt if you were building the motor.Anyhow good luck.

In my humble opinion, for a stock application,a 2 bolt main is fine.If you are building a hot rod or pulling heavy loads, the 4bolt is stronger. There are a lot of hot rodders running 2 bolt main blocks at 1 HP per cubic inch and not having any problems.GM themselves built some pretty hot engines with the 2 bolt block. The small block Chevy is a good tough engine and the 2 bolters are just fine.JMHO,Moline

I second Moline's view- people think that those extra bolts add 100 horsepower or something.

When the serious engine builders are using a Chevy block they use a factory two bolt block and have it machined to use aftermarket splayed four bolt caps.
