Telephones and electric fencers

Yes electric fencers can an do cause problems with the telephone plant, and yes it can start suddenly even if the fence has been up for years.
I hope not to offend any one with my comment just to provide some insight from someone that has had to deal with this problem as a repairman for the telephone company. yes there are a lot on new guys, old guys, guys that really don't care if it get fixed or not. I not a nebie or ready to retire only 10 years so far, but the old guy in our garage.

Noise problems are not always fencers. I just spent two days inside a shopping mall looking for the cause of a click on our cable, found a store with a bad cordless phone that was channel searching constantly and backfeeding the click into our cable all the way back to our cental office (about 3/4 Mile away)

Russ(NC) No, I don't think an RFI filter would help, I think it is more of something causing a hi resistance open or hi resistance ground on the fence line. I feel that the phoneline running paralell to your fence has nothing to do with your problem.

Buickanddeere- good reply AM radio tuned off channel is one way of tracking down noise on the fence.

Ibby- I have never run into your situation but will keep it mind when I am looking into fencer caused noise, thanks

RayP(MI)- good info your right about poor splices,is one example of a hi resistance open.

CLW - Your right some strange thing do happen, however, on this I would tend to disagree, a humm or constant buzz is most likley a power influence problem an intermitent buzz only at times I would look into a welder or somthing causing an unbalanced load on the power lines power influence problems can usually be traced back to shield discontiuity or bonding/grounding trouble and is more prone to show up in drier cnditons and more so with single phase power as oppsed to three phase.
Your are correct if the trouble is not at the serving term you may well have a drop problem.
If the charger is on the same circuit I think the click would have showed up long ago

Mark - IN - I really don't think slc96, series5, fuji, or litspan is the problem. I have had clicks caused by fencers in both PG sytems and straight copper plant. and in most cases it was indeed a fence problem inducing the click on the cable for several miles. If you run into a problem with noise contact you ICEP engineer and have them give you some assistance that is what they get paid for. I you need the the name of yours ask your first level or email me and I will see if I can get it for you.

VA tom - the first thing I would do is to check with your neighbors to see who has electric fencers try shutting each one off until you find the one causing the trouble. good plant or bad plant can be affected by fencer problems your ISP may be right the click can be causing a problem

T BONE I never tried the coil trick I will make a note of it when I looking into fencer interference I think your right about it being a ground problem

TIPS - any repairman for the phone company carries an inductive probe, walk the fenceline with the probe turned on and see if it gets louder a any certain point, the louder the click on the probe the closer you are to the problem.

Look at splices, insulator with rust causing a hi-resistance ground, grass brush, snow, wire touching the ground and the like.

walk the area at night and look for sparks especally on damp nights.

drive the area with AM radio tuned off station and listen for the click to get louder as you get closer to the trouble spot

Contact your Pulic Utilities Commission and they will contact the local telco and get them to help you fix/locate the problem. If any one has any questions please let me know and I will try to help -- Rick

Actually, I was pointing out that the trouble can be surfacing anywhere, in a joking way. But, since are both buried, and likely running parallel instead of just bisecting in one spot, I'm going to guess that someone really should check both the telco's cable for grounding and bonding. That certainly won't do much for a buried cable that has been breeched and is taking on moisture. There sure is a lot of old failing UG, and a lot of pairgain going in because of it, and no one's gonna bury new UG. As a matter of fact, is now a lot of fiber going into new subdivisions and business areas right up to the building. Lot of bad UG out there.

The reason that I brought up the litespans and slc's is that they in turn have brough there own problems (probably not in this case, and perhaps so if any of those UG pairs go back to one). These days, it is our first line's and aboves position to say "It's the customer's fault, close out your ticket and move on" to the next peg count to make their numbers look good, instead of digging into cronic problems. These days, it's about numbers instead of getting the job done right, and I'm one of the guys that will stay there until it gets done, not caring if someone's numbers looks great, or not. Our customers pay our mortgages and without them, our mortgages don't get paid. It'd be nice to get the bosses to understand that no customers equates to out of business for us.

I've seen litespan do some strange things with specific vintage or release cards, and when call tech support, they don't want to talk about it, or hear it. There's one particular card, believe it's Rls 23 Fujitsu where the card has a tendency to go to sleep, if you will. It's a known problem, no one wants to admit it formally, and can bring the card back to life. The only problem is that you keep getting the same cronic complaints about NDT's. Someone will frog cards, and someone else will end up with an intermittant NDT. Enough complaints will come in (if big enough business customer), and eventually those cards will get pulled in lieu of a different vintage or release, and those cards will end up in a warehouse somewhere until the next litespan gets installed somewhere, and then those same cards re-appear at that somewhere else. I've seen that happen. Not good business, but sure do make the peg counts look good, for the short term. But you can't make the bosses look beyond the short term like the in old days, their new bosses won't allow it because the penthouse types won't allow it - doing it right takes too long, so makes the numbers look bad.

I totally agree with bosses only looking at numbers. we have 20 techs from up here working in Ohio on IMO. just so we have enough work (I have plenty to do with I/R, Cable repair, working on Backlog construction projects( some 5-6 years old!!) storm damage clean up from 2 yrs ago. not to mention the occasional fencer problem. Oh one thing, I have had an Rpots card in a slc96 go bad an cause a real bad clicking problem. I also know about the "move the card-cleared my trouble game" We only have 4 techs in the whole county so we learn real fast who the shister is. The company has our managers working 6 days a week to "get the numbers up", but they are still letting them pay for their health care. lol - CWA4025 -
