Oil around Spark Plug

My MF65 Gas starts and runs perfectly and works for hours with no problems. However I did notice today when went to pull my spark plugs out and look at them that one of the plugs had a slight amount of oil around the base of the plug. I have always had a problem with my plugs being kind of black when I pull them but I attribute that to a lot of idling. But what would this oil indicate. The motor had good compression when I had it checked about a year ago and does have pretty good oil pressure(about 20 to 25 at start up and about 15 to 20 at 1500 rpms after working several hours and about 5 to 10 at idle after several hours work). Anything to worry about or should I just leave well enough alone since it runs and works so well. Also this tractor does not burn a lick of oil. Thanks for any advice.

Sammy: By around base of plug I'm going to assume you mean in the gap between the plug shell and the electrode insulator. Oil accumulating there would indicate a bad (i.e. cracked and missing) valve oil seal, or a bad valve guide. When the engine is shut off, oil drips down the valve stem and winds up on the sparkplug amoung other places. Typically this is seen as a puff of burning oil when the engine is started. As for real effects, it doesn't mean a thing to engine performance until 1) the spark plug continually fouls; or 2) the valve wobbles so much in guide that it beats the valve seat out. Best advice is to ignore the problem. It'll probably be a long time before any engine work is needed.

I recently took my '95 Mazda 626 to the car shop and they took out my spark plugs, only to notice oil around two of the plugs. They told me I was on the verge of blowing my head gasket but after reading the previous entries, you mention that all I seem to need is a valve seal. Please reconfirm before I pay out the a@# considering I'm only a college student.

let sleeping dogs remain quietly asleep. Change oil regularly, use a good 30 wt with one or two cans of STP oil treatment. Be happy,- - the tractor gods are smiling on you. If you tear into that MF for what you've mentioned, the tractor gods will think you have too much money, and they will take it away. Best, RKS
