Got this truck that has gave me hell ever since I bought it, not to long ago. First, It was drinking oil, but how was it getting in to the feul tanks we couldn"t understand. Then we figured it out, the injectors were no good, so we replaced them. Now the oil pressure has dropped from 40psi to around 20psi. After plugging into the ECM, the engine has 5200hours on it, with 135k miles. It runs well, but the problems that we are having are just mind boggling. Any ideas what is wrong with this engine?

Rob I'v got the same setup with 227500 miles on it. Have no idea how many hours but there are a bunch with a PTO driven air compressor and IMT crane on it. The engine has been turned up to about 250 HP. It holdes 25 lb oil pressure at idle. Have been told that there is a seal in the injector pump that can leak oil into the fuel return( don,t know first hand) BUT I do know a power stroke in a ford will do it

WE HAVE 23 OF THESE IN OUR SCHOOL BUS FLEET CHECK TO MAKE SURE THE O-RINGS ON THE INJECTORS ARE SEALING. IF NOT OIL COULD BE GOING BACK TO THE FUEL TANK AGAIN AND COULD BE LOSING PRESSURE PAST THE INJECTORS

Rob,

Just throwin' darts at a wall, but do you suppose the bottom end has 'washed' on you? That engine ought to run a heck of a lot longer than 5200 hours.

My question is where does the engine get its oil pressure from? The oil pump, Cam, or from the main bearings?. I have not a clue, where to start. The engine still run great, just the oil pressure is making us wonder, if the engine can run efficiently on this low of oil pressure.

Hi Rob,

The oil pump is pumping against the clearances of the combined crankshaft and camshaft bearings. The higher the wear, the lower the pressure.

First step would be to hook up a known good gauge to make sure that what you see is what you are really getting. You might just have a bad gauge.

Due to the increased torque in a diesel, those crankshaft bearings really have to withstand huge loads. I don't think I'd want to run it on 20 lbs. of pressure.

Aren't those Cats suppossed to run up there around 80 lbs?

Allan

I've got a friend who has had 2 of them. One was the regular cab and now he has a 4 door. No issues with either one. Beging used to a big block Chev., the low oil pressure was a concern. Cat says it's well within specs. Your miles verses hours ( alittle over 26) says that it has been idling alot. Maybe that is some of the problems.
