I bought a Farmall 400 about 3 yrars ago and it had a 12 volt battery in it and nothing had been converted on the tractor.I have been told that all the 400's were 6 volt and were positive ground.I have been using this tractor with a 12 volt battery for 2 years connected negative ground, Anyone have any information on this--al bane

400 lp were 12 volt but gasser were 6 the diesel was 12 volt all were pos .ground . But you can make all of them 12 volt neg, with out to much work . And going to and alt is not that hard to do and do it corretly but i have seen a bunch that have been butchered.

Again,I bought this tractor,Farmall 400 gas, and it had a 12 volt battery in it and was connected negative ground. The wiring has not been tampered with and all the wiring, voltage regulator, starter, coil, generator, ect are all original. After 2and 1 half years the battery went down and thats when I was told that it should be positive ground.I have an operator's manual and it shows a 6 volt battery in one section and a 12 volt battery in another.Kinda confusing, isn't it.

You still could have a conversion using the diesel parts - if done right would 'look' original.

If the manual mentions it, then you are in the change-over years, when vehicles & tractors were changed from 6v pos ground to the new standard of 12v neg ground. All such upgrades get kinda confusing if they happen during a model year. :)

thanks Paul--It was just confusing to me when the manual shows both a 6 and 12 volt battery but it does mention that it is a 6 volt system in the back of the manual in the specs pages--al bane

That's what I was wondering - if some of them were offered with a 12v generator. Then either it is an LP or diesel, or someone used diesel parts to convert the gasser to a 12v system. As you say, positive or negative ground is easy to do with a generator, just set up the regulator they way you want to go. Personally I prefer keeping it to original specs, less confusing for those working on it...

I'm not so familiar with that era IHC - is it gas or diesel - was that even an option?

The only things that really matters are the light bulbs. Starter, ignition, etc don't care. If the batery stays charged they must have changed the regulator or put on an alternator.

Might have a factory 12V generator on it. The auto industry mostly converted from 6V to 12V in 55,400's were built through 56. Check voltage at the battery posts with the engine running fast.If the voltage reading is at/above 13.5 v and below 15V,you have a good working 12V charging system.
