is a 353 Detroit really 27" wide, 35" tall, and 33" long?. Seems kinda excessive to have a block that huge for just a 3cyl. inline with only 53 cubic inches per cylinder.

I ran a tape measure across the 3-53 in my backhoe. It's about 24" long from the back of the governor housing to the front of the crankshaft pulley. Height is 28" from the oil-pan gasket to the top of the valve cover. My oil pan is around a foot deep which makes my 3-53 40", but I'm sure the pans vary.

Looks about right.I put a 4-53 in an IH 4X4 pickup, the engine compartment was very full. That was one very macho sounding and running pickup with the 2 cycle buzz and the screaming roots blower. Got real old if you had to listen to it on a long long trip.Turning that little engine up to it's 3000 rpm redline would produce a jet engine like scream from the blower and an exhaust sound that was like a 4 cylinder 4 cycle turning 6000 rpm, made people crank their heads around to take a look. The little 53 series is wide with the blower sticking out the side of the block, and tall because the sleeves/block have to be tall enough to fit that tall piston and long stroke and still uncover nearly 2 inches of intake ports at the bottom.

 Detroit 3 53 fuel economy in reply to Jon H, 01-25-2005 00:01:45
What kind of fuel economy do the 3 53's get. Gallons/hr or mpg. My uncle wants to put one in a 66 Chev 1 ton but wants to know mileage first. Thanks

Thanks, I was hoping the 353 would be smaller though because I was thinking of trying to repower a farmall H with one, but I went out and measured the original block and it's only about 11" wide, somehow I don't think a 27" block would look good even if I did modify the frame rails out wider. Yes, I've heard them run as 2 of my neighbors have log skidders with Detroits, 1 is a 353 and the other a 453, they sound awsome, especially the 453.
