Proud owner of a new house. The Missus and I lay in bed at night and listen to the scratchings of what sound like a battalion or so of mice in the attic. Attic has blown insulation. How do I get rid of them? How do I stop them from coming back? Does my builder carry any responsiblity here? Any help would be appreciated as I've found that while children make intimacy difficult, mice make it impossible.

I've got critters, so I've got rats and mice. After trying various traps and such, I finally went with the serious poison baiting stations. That has worked very well for me. These stations hold large chunk type baits that the rats and mice cannot drag off to hoard. They gnaw, they die. The rat and mouse population dropped like the proverbial brick.

You could do them like the old maid lady I rented an upstairs apartment from when I first married many years ago and didn't know to check to see how nutty the land lord was. We had a 1 upstairs bed room apartment that was one room away from over her downstairs bedroom, We heard rats and mentioned it to her after a week of the rat noises in the fall. She said she would take care of it. So I thought that would be the start of something better. NOT SO!! At about 10:30 the next night as I lay still trying to determine where the varmits were so I could tell her of their whereabouts I heard a shot. Went down to see what was the matter and the old bat was lying in the bed shooting through the ceiling with a .22 caliber rifle at the sounds! Luckily it was the ceiling that was under the floor of her reserved upstairs storage room. I told her that somebody could get killed that way! She answered that the rats were there first and that was how she had always handled it! Needless I got moved the heck away from that house in the next day or two and stayed away! This really is a true story!! The woman died about 30 years ago and the family has let the house rot down, but maybe the rats are happy, Kinda funny many years later, but was scary at the time. If your house has vinyl siding, this may help. A few years back, I had a mouse find his way into my attic when it got cold. I followed his tracks in the snow and found the mouse was climbing up to the attic using the square, hollow vinyl pieces on the outside corners of the house. I put some metal screen material into all the corner pieces to keep the mouse out but still allow ventilation. Haven't heard any attic noises in years.

If in a dry place, mix flour and Portland cement powder 50/50. The mice will eat it but will be unable to eliminate it.

You think the rats are bad! We bought our house 2 year ago and moved in April. We had been there 2 weeks and I turned the central air on and was watching TV. I heard someing scatching at one of the vents. I thought it was a mouse and I beat on the vent to run it out. About 15 seconds later me,the wife and kid had to jump ship becase a skunk had sprayed the whole house. Ended up that my family had to leave for a week while I went to war with the skunk. Big female had 7 little ones inside of my duck work. I had to pull and replace my whole system all the way to my vents.
I thought that I had won the war but the other night I came home from the shop I found another shunk trying to dig in under the new central unit. I don't know what to do. I hate moving but if this keeps up something has got to GO!

Prairiedeere, what you need is a skunk trap. I just bought one and it works like a champ. I had two skunks under my house, it took 2 nites to trap the stinkers.

Well heck, I might as well throw my 2cents worth in!! This is a proven method, GUARANTEED!! An old timer said to get a bucket and fill it up part way with water with some antifreeze in it. Tie a wire from one side on the bucket to the other and put loops in the middle to hold a piece mouse bait, doesn't matter what kind. Put an inclined board up to the bucket and they'll climb right up there, grab a bite, and fall off in the water and drowned, with absolutely no smell. My son tried it in their new double wide and got nine the first night. Don't put any poison out anywhere else. Make sure its where your pets can't get to it, or they'll be gone too.
I never did have any luck with poison without them stinking to high heaven.
Good luck,
Irv

Irv,

I have a similar trap. The only differnce in Mine is I put a plastic bottle on the wire and smeared peanut butter on the bottle. kind of like a log rolling contest, most we caught durring 2 weeks @ our cabin was 17. Like you said with the ant-freze they don't smell and it keeps working in cold weather.

I like your idea better. Some people use the same bottle idea to keep the squirrels out of a bird feeder.

I put this up on the site some time back and one of the guys really hit my tickle bone. He suggested that we set out instant mashed potatoes next to a saucer of water. The mice will eat the instant mashed potatos and then drink the water. They will swell up and bust. My sons and I are looking forward to trying that when the weather gets a little better. We just have to see that!!!

Crawl up in the attic and scatter moth flakes around there and every other place in the house you think that they might be. Make sure you get the h_ll out of the way as the mice will run over you trying to get out.

I once read in Successfull Farming to put dryer softener sheets in stored veh. to keep mice out. We put one in a car and two in a large camper ad it has worked so far. I don"t know how many it would take in a house.
My sister has 11 cats and no mice problems.

Why the hel- won't the builder be responsible. If it's a brand new house he obviously didn't do a very good job or screwed up someplace!!!!! !

Get real!!!!! What is new? 3 months, 6,12, 2 years? With this line of reasoning when is the builder not responsible? Why address this issue as in most states vermon are excluded anyway? Lets move on.

Iowa Dave, As an insurance agent in NNY I couldn't agree more! I might add if the prob is that bad buy 2-3 products such as decon. I have found that many times mice/rats need a second choice.

Had the same thing in my last house. On top of pounding like elephants overhead, they built a nest in one of the walls. As others have suggested, Decon was what did it for me. I found that they were coming in through the garage and were sneaking in at a gap where the drywall didn"t close off as well as could be. I put the Decon up in the rafters in the garage and they brought it inside and killed each other off. I found Decon pellets in my basement where they dropped through a wire access hole in the floor from the nest that they had in the wall above. After getting rid of them I sealed up the garage and that did the trick.

Keep refreshing the Decon. It loses it"s punch after a while. It will say on the box.

I take it this a brand new home? Man that sucks. I doubt if your builder will do anything. It might be worth a try just commenting to him about your prob. If he's a decent guy he might help you out $$wise if you hired an extermenator. Just a thought.

We fought and fought mice /rat problem in old trailer we use for hunting cabin. Tried every kind of trap, they work,,but you have to continualy reset them , and if few days go by you have one big stinking mess . Tried the plug in pest repel deals ,,,I think the mice thought it was soem new music player for them , lol .. Best luck we had so far is Decon ,,,,hardley seen any sign of mice any more. My understanding is that they eat it ,,get real thirsty and go outside in search of water , and die outside . We havn't found any dead mice in trailer yet or have any smell problems. Also I think True value hardware has product called "Rat Away " supposed to work great for keeping rats/mice out of car, equipment , buildingd etc..Havn't tried it yet but might be good idea

If you can stand the smell of peppermint, scatter the contents of a bottle of extract around areas where you think they might be, i.e. attic, etc.

They don"t like the smell and will move on.

After the rats are dead someone must find and seal all the holes in the building envelope.Rats can get thru holes the size of a quarter.

I have the same problem in my house every fall. Just leave some decon around and they will eat it up. Then they die. For some reason, they dont stink. You might have to do it a couple of times to get em all.

I have the same problem every fall. The little bas-rds can get in anywhere. I am told that they will sit at the bottom of a door where the heat is excaping and run in when you open it. You have to be smarter than the mice. Find a spot that they traffic and put down traps with peanut butter. You have to ding down the little v that is the trigger of the trap(I call it hair trigger) The traps as you buy them are not worth a sh-t. I get two or three every year.

The best mouse trap I've tried is the "Better Mouse Trap". Don't get the Victor look alikes. Add a little Jiff for the old peanut butter surprise.
