Hello All,

I am the proud owner of a pair of fresh 53's, one is a 353, the other is a 453. They are both N's. The question is this, what can I plant them in? I am in need of a crawler/dozer and a Loader/Hoe, I know Clark and Oliver used them, Who else? and the last question is does anyone have one of these collecting dust or ice cicles out back and would like to work a trade for them and yes there is always cash...

Many thanks My e-mail is a_s_taylor@yahoo.com

I have an old Franklin Skidder with a beautiful Detroit Diesel engine. It always starts and runs like a sewing machine. However I don"t know about DD engines. Perhaps you can tell me what to look for. Is there any discussion forums or sites like YT that we can hear more about these gems.

Thanks to all, I am in the Market for any of the listed Makes, however only in loader/hoe and crawler form. As for the Truck thing, I have seen and OLDER F100, "53 I think with a DD53 in her, geared right with a 5 speed and a 2 speed rear it got the job done, me I will stick with my current F250 with the powerstroke and a 5 speed, call me silly I just like a truck I can depend on and arrive in peace with the wife.....

Again many thanks and if in your travels you find a crawler or hoe in need of a transplant, keep me in mind.

Anthony

I know they are maybe a little heavy, but how about sticking one in a pickup? Maybe with a truck transmission and clutch from the junkyard.

My neighbor has a 3-53 in his pickup truck. It's a gutless wonder, way underpowered. And, coming down the road it sounds like he's doing 60 MPH when he's actually doing 20. Interesting though.

The 4-53 was used in many of the older cranes like Bucyrus, Linkbelt, and Koering. They were also used in some of the older Linkbelt excavators.

Older boats for propulsion but more often for running the generator. Diesel in a small pleasure craft is fine now with the low sulphur fuel. In the past the smell of fuel drips, spills and exhaust just ruined the experience. With four valve heads and the later improved valve and cam follower springs. A four valve N53 should make 20 to 30 HP per cylinder depending on injector size and rpms.

Pettibone-Multihoe and Dynahoe backhoes use Detroit 3-53s. Also some Vermeer trencher-backhoes. It's kind of a small engine. I haven't seen any dozers with them, but I'm sure they exist somewhere. Deere used a 2-53 in the 440 crawler, and Allis Chalmers used 2-71s,3-71s, 4-71s, 6-71s, and a few even bigger ones but none of the 53 series that I've seen. Used to be a lot of log skidders around with 3-53s e.g. Timberjack, Franklin, Pettibone, etc.
