I need to remove the coil from an FM J4 mag. Can somebody tell me the trick of loosening those pesky screws that hold the coil place. I'm afraid to use heat on the mag housing. ?????

Sounds like an application for an impact screwdriver.

Yes I agree with the Chief. The mag gets pretty hot in the engine.Alittle heat maybe heatgun or careful torch will expand her a bit and also help.

I just went through this last week. Using the correct screwdriver is a must. I used some heat, with no problem. The aluminum houseing will expand with a little heat, and the set screw will stay the same size. 5 to 10 seconds is probably going to do it. Have fun, Stan

Just to let you know its Fairbanks-Morse.{there is a Morris magneto that carries points and cond. for F-M.]Anyhow I would spray with penetrant and use the newest sharpest proper size screwdriver with alot of downward pressure. If you start to slip in the slot tap the slot back with a small ball pean.Take your time.
