i have a md farmall with a bad or more like completely worn out engine and would like to repower the tractor with a 400 small block chevy i have, has anybody done this and can anybody give me some pointers on how to make the flywheels-clutch work i am sure i will have to lengthen the frame but think i can get by with triming the engine to fit as far as width or this is what i have been told . thanks for any info

Russ,

I think if I were going to do one , I'd look for B series cummins (consolidated diesel ) 4 cylinder .

Here is a picture of an MD with a Shepard diesel for a repower , I saw it at the Kinzers show last summer. It's a really well done installation.

Sheppard made a kit to retrofit the M's.

don't know whether that was one But I saw one at the Ageless Iron expo a number of years ago.

You shouldn't need to lentghen the frame if you put a V8 in the engines will be about the same as far as length, if you where going with a stright 6 then you would need to

MANY people have repowered "M"'s with various engines. Don't forget, you'll need a belt-drive governor to hold the engine speed constant with varying loads.

The latest Farm Show magazine has several pages of articles on repowered old tractors, with contact information for the builders, for further information.

Here's their website. You can probably find the articles on-line, (they charge a fee to look at them or print them out), or you could contact them for a copy of the latest issue.

The conversion sounds like fun! I wonder... would the diesel be rare enough to warrant selling it as-is for a good price, and looking for an "M" with a bad engine?

I have always wanted a diesel "M", but probably couldn't afford to fix one up at this time!

Also, I have a 4-cylinder small Isuzu diesel I have considered putting into a tractor. The good thing about that, it would already have a governor.

bob this one was stuck when i bought it and i freed it up but when i did it cracked the front piston liner, which when i started it it sucked the liner into the oil pan, ouch huh. i did put another liner and piston in it but it still needs to be just plain overhauled it runs but not very good.but i would sell it i guess but im in south dakota which is usually a long ways from anywere.and yea that isuzu would be a great repower candidate there usually a pretty long life engine

If you ever decide NOT to convert it, and decide to sell it, put a price on it, and email me!

bob id take $1000 for it,witch probly seems like a lot but i have about $1800 into it, the piston and sleeve cost about 350 a whole so i just put the one in, like a bone head i bught the tractor sight un seen and it wsnt supposed to be stuck.but i have a gasser that i was going to part out that i can repower so it doesnt matter wich i use i dont think that ether one will be easier or better than the other to use
