I am looking for a medium size tractor that requires a 3 point hitch, at least 35 HP, and that will fit inside 7' row centers. My budget will probably require something from the 1960's. Anyone have suggestions for models they've had good luck with? If you're wondering - it's for a small tree farm.

Very competitve market for small utility tractors. Every golf course, plant nursery, horse farm, rural estate owner, tractor collector and farmer with low ceilings in the stables wants one. Even if you can't afford it, look at the dealership for a new Deere 5105 anyways. The payments are modest, resale value high and the feeling of having something new with factory warrently is secure.

Norgeman: You've allready had most of the good candidates mentioned, Fiat and Oliver 550 are other possibilities. However, Cowman came with the very best suggestion of all with the MF 35 or 135. Buy it in diesel version. They are just leap years ahead of everything else in that hp class, and a utility type tractor. The Perkins diesel will run forever and you will have to work it hard to burn 5 gal of fuel per day.

You would be hard pressed to beat a Ford 3000.
I've operated one since 1974 and worked it hard.
It is basically bullet proof if maintained properly.
Good Luck

Well, there sure are a lot of them out there, and aren't all that expensive if you look in the right places. What you really oughta do first is check on nearby dealers or parts sources, then decide. A Massey like a 35 or 135 are great choices. There are others too. Allis D14 or D15. Of course, got a wide variety of Fords that fit the bill, and small Cases like a 430, or Olivers 16xx. Can't leave out Farmalls either, although will have to ask Allan about them, I aint got one so can't help there, but sure are a lot of them out there. One thing's for sure, that other Green aint cheap under any circumstances, and I got a small '90 950 of those too. I prefer diesel period.

Check for parts and dealers first.

Mark

I'd suggest a Massey Ferguson. A 35 would be just handier than a shirt pocket.

I've gotta agree with the Nebrasca Cowman. Since I have had this MF35 I haven't bothered with my snowmobile, the golf cart gets little use, and I keep looking for things for the Massey to do.

The little Perkins is just a happy engine, easy starting and smooth running. I find it rides and steers a lot better than its predecessor, a 414 International, and it doesn't have to be plugged in much.

I feel safe operating the '35, while the old gray Ferguson TEA 20 terrified me with its high gears and flywheel pto.

Spent a lot of time on both a MF 35 and 135, and would have to agree that in the 35 hp range you are going to be hard pressed to beat those tractors. Well made, well thought out and very durable. They are in ready supply, but since lots of folks know they are so handy, they are not giving them away.

Being an IH guy, I gotta put in a good word for the IH 300 utility as well.

I sure like my little IH424,bout the same size as the masseys,36 hp hi-low,locking diff,I've found a couple really nice ones with loaders and new paint for what a MF costs bare..We have a lot of Amish folks just west of here, they almost all drive MF's,so they are hard to find used around here..
