Am new to diesels. Just bought a used bobcat, smaller 743. I follow the instructions, turn key for 60 sec, turn key back the other way to start, 20 deg. No go. I would think that a glow plug looks like all other glow plugs but don't know. I've read the archives about how to check them but I don't know a glow plug from a winning lottery number. I really would like to get this machine out of my garage. What am I looking for. Thanks. Craig in Wis.

On our Kubota, the clutch must be depressed for the glow plugs to operate. Same deal with turnign the key one way to preglow and the other way to crank. They run off the same power line from the clutch safety switch.

The farm I work/live at has a 743B with Kubuta engine. If it's the same, facing the engine from rear, on left side, there will be four wires connecting to the glow plugs right somewhere around the injectors in the head. I haven't had any luck changing the one at the back because the injector pump is in my way. Ours doesn't shut off with a key. Some do. You pull a nob beside the throttle lever. The cable breaks or rusts often. If yours is the same, I think the other end is on the side of the injector pump. Make sure it is working. In ours, the glow plugs go bad often also. Maybe try holding key longer? Open throttle 1/4? Just some ideas. I beleive the you need those darn metric tools to remove glow plugs. Good luck!

If it has glow plugs (as opposed to the manifold heater mentioned) it will have some sort of electrical connection near each injector nozzle. It may be a flat "buss-bar" going from plug to plug with a spade lug connection on one end to pick up 12v.

If you find that, or a wiring harness going to a connection near each nozzle, you've found your glow plugs. They should screw out, much like a spark plug.

If it has a manifold heater, (I think the 'bota engine in the Bobcat at work does) you'll find a wire going to a terminal on the air manifold. If you can get yer eyeball in the right place, you might be able to squint down the air manifold (take the air cleaner boot off) and see the heater grid.

I'm assuming you turn the key left (counter clockwise) and hold it, then turn right to start?

Some deisels had a heater in the manifold instead of glow plugs and some just used ether.

some glowplugs stick out of the head some and you can feel them to see if warm ,with key on... or put a test light to each lead to see if getting current. they usually have 12 volts to them thru the wire and the body of the glowplug is ground so you can take them out and test them, they get red hot if working properly.i put a set in a mercedes 4 cyl deisel yesterday that were drawing to much amperage and shuttin off at the relay.useing test light at each glowplug i saw relay supplied current for 3 seconds per turn of the key, then shut off current.i knew it was either the relay or the glowplugs, but had never seen a bad relay .tried new set of glow plugs fixed her up.... lucas
