Blockheater

I'd like to put a blockheater in my JD 6200, but there is no hole in the block to do so. I'm not incredibly fond of tank heaters, so that leaves me with a lower radiator hose heater. Has anyone any advice for or agaist these? Other suggestions would be helpful. I have been using a magnetic heater, but it's not the same.

Thanks,

Jeff

My JD dealer installed the block and tranny heaters in my 4300. A month later I added a lower rad hose heater. No comparison....(currently -30C outside-I give it an hour with the heater outlet on and it fires right up. With the block heater I had to leave it on overnight.)

I will be putting a heater in of some type. If I can put in the insert heater behind the starter, I will do that. Next choice would be the lower rad hose heater, although I don't like the idea of cords that close to belts and pulleys, that's what zip ties are for. My 6400 has a casting plug heater on the left side of the block, but my 6200 has no plug in that region, or anywhere on the block for that matter. Tank heaters have always appeared to be inefficient to me, but I could be wrong on this.

Thanks to all,

Jeff

My two Oliver 1655's both have lower radiator coolant heaters; they seem to work real good. An hour to an hour and a half is enough when it is 10 to 15 below.

Are you sure there isn't a freeze plug hole that you could a block heater in? I'm not too familiar with the new/small Deere's, but I just worked on a 6300 three weeks ago, and I know that one had a block heater, fuel heater, and transmission heater set-up. Seems like the block heater was on the left side of the engine. You should call a Deere dealer and see what they reccomend. If you want my opinion, go with a tank heater. Tank heaters have a huge advantage over block heaters, because they actually circulate hot coolant through the engine.

Have no experience with your particular application, but have had several tank heaters on various engines. Properly installed, they work very well. Don't be afraid of them.
