Built a hot air wood furnace 25 years ago use it in the basement- works fine and I also connected hot water coils to heat hot water for the house-- this could be put out side by building a fireproof insulated room aroundit and running 12" ducts ( insulated) to the home) the door on the front means a lot should be auto damper ( bi-metal spring we have the ability to draw up plans if interested

well i'll tell you what . i was going to do the same thing i am a cert. welder and have made things that i should not have .any thing is posable but i went to two shops that make them and seen the set up they have biggest thing is tooling for cutting and set up. go over to PRO-WELD at ELCHO WISC. they weld the johnson furnace for johnson.in time and materals i feel it would have cost me a LOT more then just spending the 6 grand for a proven unit. also it's the BEST 6 grand i spent . just my thinking and you can try any thing if you set your mind to it good luck

Dennis,

Do a google search for "wood boilers". There's quite a bit of information out there.

What I'd do is contact some of those companies and have them send you as much information as they can. That way you can see what's available and if you make something on your own you will have a good starting point for your design. No use re-inventing the wheel.

As an example, here's a company....
