Found a Case 311 setting in the weeds.I asked the owner what he wanted for it,his reply was,he was told that he could get 600 dollars for it at the scrap yard, sounds too high to me.I would like to save the Case from the torch. The motor needs rebuilt, needs a clutch, tin is alittle rough, needs front tire, and needs some welding here and there.I thought about offering 150 or 200.What is the scrap iron price for a whole tractor??? Also ,what is scrap iron price now for steel???

I think out here in southern Calif we are getting the short end stick. The place where I sell scrap is only giving 70.00 a ton for short iron, good heavy stuff too. I guess you can do that when you are the only store in town. Stan

Sure are, #2 heavy melt, 4' billets, was at $155 here last week. I'm real curious about why its so cheap in S. Cal. Only things I can think of are environmental regs or real estate costs for the scrap yard.

Yes, you are getting the shaft. I know the $200/ton figure is good because I saw a receipt for multiple tons of scrap we sent. A lot of the scrap is going overseas and I would think that you should be getting a premium. I guess logic again takes a back seat to the insatiable desire for more profit

I think I would call the closest scrap yard for the price they would pay, determine the weight of the tractor and use that to negotiate with. I suspect about $350 to $400 at pure scrap price.

I think I recently saw one of these auctioned off in a salvage row for about $375...this was for parts salvage not meltdown and was very restoreable. I hope you can give it a good home.

I dont know what a 311 weighs but last quote I got here was $110 a ton for breakable tractors (mostly cast) (6 days ago). Havent seen any movement off of scrap price, other areas have, mainly due to increasing transportation costs. If you are close to a mill or mini mill that will give you a ball park.

The guy was most likely talking tractor salvage and not scrap iron. He might get 600 from a tractor salvage, but I don't know that I would give it.

Someone at work recently mentioned that scrap steel was over $300/ton. I am uncertain that this is correct, although at one time this last summer it was over $200/ton. Skepticism reigns because I had heard a while back that China was backing off on imports. This caused the price to slip slightly from the $200+ level. However since that time, China reopened the gates but I didn't think it had that much effect on the price. In contrast, I do know OEM steel prices are very high and it is difficult to increase the size of your order.

For a 311? I'd tell him to "haul it in" Iron has fallen off sharply and gasoline prices have started back up.

If all the cast iron & heavy stuff is there, I've not seen an old tractor go less than $400. If it turns over or has something good like solid sheet metal, a bit more than that. Doesn't matter the color, or so old there is no color... The $600 probably isn't a bad starting price for him, you might get it down to $500 by saving him from having to haul it.

Hi Dale,

Dunno, sounds like the feller kinda wants $600 for the Case. :>)

I had to give $3500 salvage price for my last tractor, but it also came with a almost new set of tires.

Tough call on these old birds,

Allan

Yep, some old birds will let somethin rot before selling below thier price. Used to argue with my Dad about this. Somethings would actually cost money later to get rid of. Who can figuire.
