I have been looking to buy a post 65 Ford 4000 and have been shopping around. Just for the heck of it I thought I would check out some MF 165s and Cases of similar HP. The MF and Cases ranged from the 3000s (Canadian) and the Fords were all above 6000. Good ones were closer to 10,000.

My questions is, are they pretty much the same? Is the Ford, assuming condition is the same, better. Or are Fords just more expensive. The 8n being a great example.

I am not a mechanic or a tractor collector. I am just trying to get a good old tractor to pull my hay baler

One other quick question. I was looking at a 1967 case 730 4 cylinder gas for C$3900. The add says no top link. What does this mean. Also how much more expensive is gas vs diesel.

Thanks for all your responses. I really enjoy this forum/Doug

First, about the Case top link. The original case top link is a colector thing--worth a quick 100 bucks or more. thats the reason they mention it. Diesel tractors usually worth more than gas. I too, have been lookin at several 3000/4000 fords. Seems to me that any utility tractor with PS and live PTO is priced out of this world. I'd take a MF or IH. Just don't find them. Occures to me that befor I give 6000 for a tractor at farm sales, I will go to construction sales and buy one with a loader and maybe a back hoe for just a little more. Farm sales here go on Sat. so the fellows with city jobs can price the 5 foot bush hogs, 6 foot disk, etc. to more than new. Now I feel better.
