What farm magazines do you get, and depend on? I remember Farmer/Stockman and Progressive Farmer from when I was younger, but the latest issue of Progressive Farmer seems to have run out of steam. More like a pamplet now.

Anything anyone could recomend to look at the farm life, tips and tricks of the trade, along with improved techniques and methods would be great. Thanks..Ts

Farm Show- gotta have it. Mostly farmer built projects and tips. Stockman Grass Farmer is good, although you could get a 1 year subscription every 5 years or so and not miss much. I also take the Small Farmers Journal, but I'm a mixed power farm. I wish the old Country Gentleman was still published like it was back in the late 40's and 50's. Give me that and Popular Science from the same era and I'd be happy.

Are the "Farmer- Stockman" magazines still around? They had a different one for each state, I believe- got them for about 15 years, and don't ever recall paying for a subscription after the first go-around. I think they just kept sending them to keep numbers up for advertising revenue. They quit coming sometime in the 80's, I think.

I"m certainly giving up Progressive Farmer...They expect me to build their upscale house and everything that goes with it...One issue had nice rich doctor and his family moving out to the country. That about did it for me. I then figured out what the mean by "progressive" as in Income. I think we all would like more "nut and bolts" information. I get tons of helpful info out of Successful Farmer, and Hobby Farm, believe it or not. Acres USA is real good as well.

I take a bunch but only 2 really consistantly help me:
Farm Journal and Hay and Forage Grower

I also take Cattle Today, Progressive Farmer, Successful Farming, plus the Farm Bureau mag, National Cattleman (from NCBA), Ag Research (USDA), and The Forage Leader (AFGC). Alll are good and have their good points.

T.S.

I don't have any recommendation on a good farm magazine. I get Progressive Farmer and a small paper put out by the Tennessee Farmer's Co-Op, but I don't find either of them to be helpful to me. I am a small farmer who operates on a shoe string. I have 150 acres of mostly pasture land and woods. I raise black cattle and have a couple of horses. Both of the magazines that I get are aimed at the larger, wealthier farmer. They constantly talk about setting aside land for wildlife, new and improved chemical sprays, and exotic new machinery. I can't afford any of those things.

I guess I'm just not progressive enough or co-operative enough. I hope that someone else responds to your post with recommendations of a magazine that would be helpful for the little ol' dirt farmer.

You might try the Stockman Grass Farmer. It has a few articles geared toward small producers. Call 1-800-748-9808 and I think they will send out a free copy.

I have been a subscriber to ACRES USA for several years and have never seen an equal to this paper. It is more of paper than a magazine.Owned and printed by sincere and honest people. No glossy foolishness. The prominent farm magazines seem to be owned by chemical, fertilizer or seed producing companies.I suggest you call ACRES @ 1-800-355-5313 and ask for a free sample copy.Tell them that a customer sent you. That is how I got started as a subscriber. If they ask for a reference,my name is John Cooney and you can use it.Regards.
