Way off topic I know but I do watch videos of tractors! Wanted to get your input on what luck you have had with plasma and LCD tv's. And ED or HD? There are so many different names and letters that I get a headache! I don't watch too much TV, mostly movies or the History channel. I just want to but a high quality big screen set at a reasonable cost with out being stuck. For the kind of bucks they get today I want one that will be around for a LONG time. Real easy to spend a LOT of money! What on at your house guys?

If you're not set on a thin TV to hang on the wall check out the DLP's. We bought one about a year ago and love it, no burn in, 1/2 the cost of LCD or plasma, thinner than CRT, not as thin as LCD and plasma. Doesn't weigh much (our 56 inch is about 100 pounds). We love the picture and they are supposed to be very reliable - we've had no problems in a year. I was originally looking at plasma or LCD but after a lot of research I got the DLP and have no regrets- it's a pretty cool techhology also - millions of little mirrors on a computer chip. We got HD vs. ED, and are happy with it. Only drawback is is takes about 10-15 seconds to warm up..... not really a big deal.

Buick TV? in reply to Chris(WA), 01-10-2005 03:58:10
LOL. Liquid plasma? What's that? I still watch TV through an old tube radio. Once them tubes get heated up real good, can close my eyes and see everything perfectly.

I looked at HD/Ed Plasma, Rear Projection LCD and LCD. Do not buy anything with a CRT. You will burn the screen when HD comes or with analog waiting for HD to come. I ended up buying the SONY 50" Rear Projection LCD and the 5 yr warranty. Only thing to chang at 6000-8000 hrs is the lamp for $200-$300. I use the STd and FULL modes depending on what I am viewing. I am using the analog cable feed from Cox Communications. I believe SONY on this unit scales all analog signals to 720p format, so my std pictures are very good. I love the split screen feature. Don't buy anything less than 1280 by 768 resolution.

I also bought a 17" SAMSUNG LCD for the kitchen. Nice picture until you get right next to it. I need to be back 4-5 ft to get a true picture. LCD's are very reliable as I have used a 18" NEC LCD monitor for 5 yrs with no dead pixels.

My understanding is that all TV signals had to be digital by end of 2006 per FCC. Now I read that deadline might be extended to 2013.

If I had to buy a TV set today, I would look at the Mitsubishi LCD Rear Projection unit as I think they scale analog signals to 720p better than anybody else.

Good Luck

Could you expand on your quote please?

" Do not buy anything with a CRT. You will burn the screen when HD comes or with analog waiting for HD to come."

We got a Sony 50" LCD about a year and a half ago, absolutely love it..less than half the price of comparable plasma, excellent pic, doesn"t "black out" at off angles like the old big screens used to do..

Purchase a TV with built in HD tuning. My cabinet won"t fit a 16.9 wide screen. So a 4.3 that shows the black band on the top & bottom of the screen while showing 16.9 format is fine. A CRT ( picture tube) is still the cheapest, highest definition picture and lasts the longest. Pass on the plasma, LCD or projection unless you have to have a screen larger CRT"s are made in. Anaolg communications is going. Channels 70 to 83 went to cellular phones 20+ years ago. Channels 84 to 100+ went to trunked communications before that. Two way radios for business and emergency services is going to APCO-25 standard. Takes up less bandwidth and allows more users. It"s also a single compatable standard. Currently communications is like VHS,VHS-C, beta, 8mm,high8, 8mm digital etc. Nothing works with each other"s system between agencies. So if your local gov"t is putting in something other than APCO-25. Someone is either "out to lunch" or getting paid off under the table. That equipment will be coming out to be replaced with APCO-25 long before it"s worn out. AM & FM broadcast radio will eventually be replaced as well with digital. Analog communications is like the passing of the steam engine.

What is this I hear about ALL older TV's will be obsolete by 2006..or else we will have to buy a "box" to be able to use them, as all transmitting will be digital..?? I hear this more and more....is this true..??

I think it's BS, because broadcasters basically are purveyors of advertising...the shows are just the bait to get us to watch. Now, lots and lots of folks have older TV's and the networks aren't going to cut them off....and lose all those viewers. It's just a myth.

Do you remember when a television had only channels 2 – 13 and you needed a converter box to receive any UHF? Later the converter was needed for the cable Mid Band or Super Band channels? I think the phase out of analog TV chanels was decided 6 or 7 years ago.

From page 5 of the linked FCC document:

"The target date for completion of
the analog-to-DTV transition is 2006, or 85
percent household penetration, whichever
occurs later."
