Sorry about being so OT. I found out fri. my 7 year old lab has diabites. She takes the insulin shots like a trooper but will not eat hardly at all. Have tried everything I can think of. Any suggestions? Thanks, she is part of the family and I would really hate to lose her.

If the dog is being a bit picky eating try feeding some eggs, my old German Shepard prefers them raw. I just put a couple on top of her food and stir it up.

My old girl has thyroid and ear problems. Vet said he could fix up the ears with surgery, only $6000.00 Bucks .

What are the symptoms? in reply to Butcher, 01-09-2005 08:27:10
My lab's about the same age and began having problems with his pads a month or so ago. First thought stepped on something (let out a squeal and began hobbling, but couldn't find anything). Then his pads began losing their black, and chapping and getting sore. So the vet gave him anti-biotics and something to put on his pads. Gotten worse, so Friday the vet did a biopsy on two pads and a sore that's developed on his back. Results will be in next Friday. Vet is guessing might be a thyroid problem, treatable by pills, but doesn't know yet. He's gaining weight, but isn't getting exercise because the sore pads, but he tries. Will run like crazy in the snow because it's soft, but on dry dirt limps like a cripple, sore pads. Cant think of or see anything he's gotten into, except likes to hangout under the tractors, and gets greasy, so have to clean. Have a collie too, no problems with her though, but then again, she's to much of a priss to do anything. Not my boy - he goes everywhere with me, woods, fields, truck. Had some diesel fuel leak from one of the tractors, maybe that's what happened? I don't know. I even tried changing his dog food from Proplan to plain old Purina just to see if was too much protien from Proplan. No difference.

That's my boy, and does fine except the pads all of a sudden. What are the symptoms of diabites? My boy eats and is active when on something soft. Them pads are hurtin' him badly.

Hi Mark.
My dog just lost alot and I mean alot of wieght real quickly. She stopped eating and just started laying around like she was half dead. Except for the wieght and activity level the only way to tell what was the matter was a blood test and urine sample.
My dog has always been really fussy about her feet also. Always licking and dont touch them dad. It maybe yours walked in something that bothered him.
Good luck with your lab. There is a reason they call dogs "A mans best friend"

Butcher, I sure am sorry to hear it, and best of luck. I sure loves my dogs, and breaks my heart when see them having problems. My boy, Lou's been licking the pads too, and we'll see what the vet says. I've got no children, and that's my boy. Whatever I can, that's my boy.

I didn't even think about it until this post, he likes to lay under the tractors, and the Deere leaks a little diesel from time to time, so maybe. And the spot on his back is about where he gets greased up from time to time. Will call the vet tomorrow, is worth a shot.

As far as diabites goes, I'm not sure what to suggest. Like my collie-shepard, when quit eating, he would eat steak. The vet said, "Steaks full of protien and bad for him, but the alternative's starving, so feed him steak". He lasted 3 more years than was supposed to. Maybe try the boiled hamburger and rice? May not be good for diabites, but some nutrician until the vet can take another look is better than nothing.

Good luck with that lab, they sure are good dogs.

Mark

After 3 days of insulin shots twice a day my lab is doing alot better. I just got to get some food in her. She is eating more today after giving her some human food. The vet will chew my a$$ next week when I take her in to check glucose levels but I have been chewed on by worse folks than them. Ha,Ha, Good luck.

We have always had good luck with cooked hamburg and cooked rice mixed together. Sometimes scrambled eggs are tasty. Good luck with your pet.

Hey ya Mike, I've heard of and did the boiled hambuger and rice thing for a collie-shepard that I used to have that had developed kidney problems. The vet and a few people told me that. Is real bland and gets rid of some of the protien that's hard on kidneys. It helped for that, until they isolated it to a virus and treated it. Told me he'd live two years after that tops, but lasted 5 more real active years until one day, the kidneys gave out, no warning. Toss up between him and my lab, best dogs I ever had, and have had a few.

Try some Nutra-Cal paste. Your local Vet clinic should carry it. Just smear some on her upper lip that she can lick off. Works well on our dogs when they are off their feed.
Good Luck

try canned cat food, the stinker, cheaper the better they (dogs) like it. we had a geriatric german shephard who loved it.
