Strange signal light problem

I have a '91 Chevy Caprice that I have owned for about 6 months. I have been having trouble with the signal lights for the last two months. The first time it happened, I tried to signal for a turn, the lights came on, including the indicator light on the dash, but the lights did not flash. Everything else was normal, all the bulbs were fine, just wouldn't flash. I replaced the flasher unit under the dash, and everything was fine for two weeks, then it happened again. I once again replaced the flasher and everything was fine for awhile. So far, I've gone through about four flashers, but each time, it fixed the problem. The other night, the signal lights quit flashing again. I replaced the flasher, but it did not slove the problem. I checked the fuse and all bulbs, everything else was fine. I even tried a second new flasher, and a known good flasher out of one of my pickups. According to the wiring diagram I have, power can only get from the fuse to the signal light switch through the flasher unit. However, if I remove the flasher, the lights still come on. I think this must mean that there is a short between the wire going to the flasher and the wire from the flasher. Do you guys agree? My multimeter is about 50 miles away from me right now, won't be able to get it till Monday. Anything else to check in the meantime? Everything works as it should with the hazard flashers on.

Mornin" Jim,

I can"t remember for sure exactly when they changed to that "smart" flasher, but it was sometime during that era.

But just for the sake of argument, let"s say it does take the old 552 flasher.

GM designed that thing to "stay on solid" when something is wrong to alert you to the problem. What I mean is, if just one bulb is bad, the thing won"t flash; it will just come on and stay on.

The way I get around this is to use the heavier 4-way flasher in the turn signal socket as well. This heavy-duty flasher will flash, no matter if some of the bulbs are burnt out or not.

Also, like the other fellas have said, that car is fourteen years old and maybe that switch isn"t making contact anymore.

But, if the problem is in the switch, you should be able to "wiggle" it enough to make it work, at least intermittently, to locate the source of your trouble.

Hope you get it figured out,

Allan

Make sure you are replacing the turn signal flasher and not the four way flasher. I work in an auto parts store and have seen this mistake many times. Most vehicles have two flashers and for some reason the four way or hazard is much easier to find. To check if the flasher you"re replacing is actually the four way unit turn on the hazards and see if it is the one clicking. If it is look for another one. They"re usually the same part number. Turn signal flashers are often clipped into a little bracket under the dash and not in the fuse box.

A bad switch can cause this problem. The brake lights and the turn signal lights use the same bulb. Part of the function of the turn signal switch is to disable the brake light for the selected turn signal so it's not on all the time and allowed to blink. If the switch is shorted or a piece of plastic holding the contacts broken, brake voltage could be feeding back toward the flasher and cause weird things to happen to the turn signals.

Check all the bulbs and make sure they are EXACTLY what the manual calls for. I see many problems of this. Many times someone has accidently put in the wrong one. Like a 1157 for a 2057. Same base and contacts but different amp draw. Can burn up flashers or will not draw enough amps to make the flasher "pop" and it will just stay on. I have seen fillaments that broke loose in the bulb and shorted against the other one intermittently and can really baffle you. I dont know about your exact model but the 90's model chevy trucks are notorious for tail lamp bulb sockets going bad and causing similar problems. And of course the first thing I always do is check the grounds. More times than not I find automotive elecric problems caused by poor grounds. Good luck David

I was kind of wondering about that, but it just dosn't seem to make sense. How can the power still get to the switch with the flasher removed? Could there be a short between the signal light switch and the hazard switch?

Jim,

Sounds to me like you are putting in the wrong flasher. If I remember right, that car takes that expensive "transistorized" flasher, doesn't it?

Last I knew, they were something like $17 a pop? Kind of a square, green, transparent, plastic gizmo that you can see the workings inside?

Dunno,

Allan

Allan, the flasher that was in it when I bought the car had a round tin outer case. I belive the number on it was 536/552, I know the /552 part is right, not sure what the first three numbers are without looking. Anyway, the first time it happened, I was near a very good auto parts store. I just assumed the flasher was the trouble, and just went in and bought a new one without even looking at the number on the old one. The number on the new flasher the parts guy looked up for me matched the old one. So far, every gas station I have been near when the flasher quits carries the same one. I'll have to double-check the manual to see if you're on to somthing here. Thanks!
