I have been considering upgrading from my 8n to something bigger and newer. I was considering a ford 4000, but recently I have seen a pretty good deal (I think) on a ford 4400.

Its 4 sale on e-bay and has a PTO, 3pt hitch, and a nice loader. Recent engine overhaul, tune up in fall. US$ 3700.

My main question is whats the big difference between an ag tractor vs an industrial? I mainly want to use this as a utility tractor but would also like to bale some hay. 10-20 acres depending upon how ambitious I am.

I appreciate any input/Doug, Ontario

Sorry about the long time to reply, had misplaced sheet. Next to last digit in model number is PTO code. 4400 model # should start with "D40". "2" is transmission type, "3" is "live" 540, "4" is independant 540.

Get the actual model number from the tag under the hood and get it decoded to find out what kind of PTO it has. Most industrials will have the same type of "transmission" PTO like your 8N, when you push in the clutch the PTO will stop. Some did have "live" (two stage clutch), or independant but not common. Your New Holland dealer will have the chart to decode, or check the archives on the Ford board here. I"ve got one at home, I"ll re-check this post tonoght and if you haven"t got it I"ll tell you which digit to look at for getting PTO type. The only Fords with hydrostatic PTO"s were the FW series of blue painted Steigers, so you don"t have to worry there.

Doug, some Ford Industrial tractors have a hydraulic drive PTO, these are only good for light work (up to 30 HP) not suitable for a rotary cutter or baler.

Doug, the 4400 (utility) has a much heavier front axle which is welcome for a loader but has not much front-end clearance above ground; it is OK for baling but not the best for hay raking; you did not mention if it is a gas, Diesel engine or a SOS trany; if it is gas and SOS ???, I would prefer a 3/4/5000-Diesel and 8-speed trany. Last word about 4400, the power steering is not easy to repair, compared to ag models.
