I am trying to figure how many bags of ready mix cement it would take to make a cubic yard in volume. It's after closing time so I am at the mercy of you folks and I need to know pretty quick. Thanks in advance for replying!

46bags @ $4.00 per bag = $184.00 per yard.
Where I live, it's a 4 yard min redi-mix delivery.
4 yards @ $72.00 per yard = $288.00
I don't hand mix more than a yard.

It takes 45 or 46, 80 pound bages of concrete mix to make a yard of concrete.
Volume of 80# bag is .6 cubic feet:
27cu.ft./.6cu.ft.per bag = 45 bags

Weight of 1 cu.ft. concrete is 136 pounds.
27X136# = 3672#, 3672#/80#=46bags (approx)

I have made several small pours in the past few months, and have found that 46, 80 pound bags per yard works. The people that sell the mix will not know the correct number of bags per yard.

HI Forum

Just a little note, cheap mortar box. Cut with a sawall(make chalk line) an old 250 gallon drum, used 3 blades, grinder to smooth edges. Cut so it would be on it side when done holds about 1/3 of a yard for mixing, 10-15 bags of redimix, hard mixing if you add more than 7; 80 Lbs. Bags . Used old steel fence rods to make handles. Took about two hours topps, and five heplers or stand byes, you would need three people and switch the cutting little rough at time get hard on one person.

Can be used to haul sand, gravel, fertilizer any thing just weld chains or hooks to it for lifting.

Have a Good One !!

I was always told it takes 5 bags of portland to make 1 yard and thats with some thing like 7 bags of equal size of gravel per bag of cement.

Should be printed on bag how many it takes to make a cubic yard, but belive it or not it's cheaper to call the redi mix place and have the same amount delivered from town. But if I remember right 1 bag is a third of a cubic foot

Hey ya Leland, Happy New Year to you and yours. You're right, should be on the bag, and would depend on 60#, 80#, 100# bag too. Is gonna take a lot. If are planning on a sizable job, have the local guys dump the mixes in piles and mix yourself. And if having redi-mix delivered, calculate the right amount. When put up my new tool shed, came up 1/2 yard short. No problem, had a nearby truck that had some extra, so they could "have him drop by", If I wanted it. I did, so they did. Paid another $100.00 delivery charge because was a "seperate order". Stupid me, and ended up with a full yard, so add-libbed a ramp that I didn't really need, but have now. Mama didn't raise no brain surgeon or rocket scientist in me.

I keep a list of 'nice to be concrete jobs'. When I make a big pour I always order and extra yard (it seems I always end up a 1/2 yard short too). Then its there if I need it and if I dont I just get some of the 'nice to' jobs done.

usually if we pour a 24x24 x 4 we just tell the redi mix people and they add it up never been short but I belive they add extra just to make sure

Yeah well, I'm still new to the area and never dealt with the guys before. But just the same, I'm happy with the outcome, and not complaining. Didn't expect the extra $100, but was worth it. No biggie really. To be honest with you, my brother was helping me saw it and he's pretty much gone blind these days. Knowing that, the second driver hopped in and started shoveling it to help out. He didn't have to do that, and it was like mid-thirties cold. I'm appreciative, very. Both drivers were great. No complaints from me.

Off topic of the off topic: I'm going to have concrete put into my 72 x 30 barn next spring-summer and I am wondering how thick should I go? I kind of like the idea of using fibercon (sp?) to add strength. In my area, concrete per yard is at $78, with fibercon add $6. The heaviest thing in the barn would be my 4010 gas. I'm being told that 4" to 6" would be about right. I've never dealt with any of this before. Any suggestions? Thanks, Mike

I'm the wrong guy to ask, but that's a great question and rates a topic of it's own, it's a valid question, and it's not off topic. There are guys here that do concrete for a living, and I'm not one, and can't advise there. The guys putting up a new 40x60 for me right now are going 4" fiber reinforced, except for a bay that's going to have a hoist and it's own seperate thicker pad. I did my own 8x24 pad for a tool shed at 5.5". I got carried away on thickness, and that's why no one pays me to do their concrete - I know squat about it.

Post your question, it's not off topic in the least.
