Coil Problems

Can anyone help??? I have an IH Cub 1250, 12V, magneto, points. Over the past few years I have replaced the coil several times but more recently it"s only lasting a couple months. When I crank it, with the plug out and grounded, it sparks initially, then dies out and it may or may not spark on the last revolution. When I replace the coil with a new one it fires right up.

I have noticed that on high rpm"s it"s charging full all the time but never indicates the battery is fully charged and as I throtle the engine down, the charge rate drops as well. I have replaced the coil three times over the past year. I use it often for mowing, leaf vac, and plowing.

I would appreciate any suggestions. Thanks!

If it really is a magneto ignition, the battery voltage is never used in the ignition system. The coil is fired by voltage generated by the rotating magnet(s), and has no connection to battery at all. Gene Davis

On occasion a tinkerer will tie a power source through a balky mag with tired magnets or misaligned magnets/poles. The primaries get fed 6 or 12V and then the primary is energised/de-energised through the mag's points. The secondary coil is left intact. Usually too much voltage applied and too high current through the mag coil's primaries.

Steve, Jon is correct in what he said. I'm not sure with the mag how it would relate but if your 12 volt doesn't have a resister to reduce the volts going to the coil it could do damage over a period of time as you have indicated.

If the charge rate of your 12V generator/alternator never backs off,it sounds like you have a voltage regulator problem. Check the system voltage at the battery posts with the engine running fast, it should be no higher than 15 volts with 14.2 being ideal. You say the tractor has a mag? If so the overcharge condition should have no effect on the mag coil, unless the mag has been reworked into a battery powered ignition system. With a mag converted to battery ignition or a distributor/coil ignition, very high charging system voltage may well be causing short coil and point life.
If the mag is stock, try a new condenser and make sure it's mounting pad and elecrical connections are clean and tight.
