Oh No!

The wife is making noises that since I have my old tractors that she thinks she should be able to buy a horse.

How will I ever be able to hold my head up in public again?

I'm so disappointed in this silly woman! :>(

Allan, Allan, Allan, you're not thinkin. She just bought you another IH, so run with it. Paint the darn thing black, yes black. And make sure has two good headlights, and tell her it's Belgian.

"You know Dear, they are big and slow and all, and you can still ride it (padded saddle too), and when you aint, I can use it for some chores. Stack? That aint no stack, it had a colostemy, but I'll take it into the barn and try to reverse it, if I can, the poor thing. Ya see Dear, you saved it from the glue pot".

Allan, Allan, Allan, every negative has a positive, just gotta look for it.

Yes Sir,

I know. I'm just flappin' my gums.

This ol' sister has an IQ that will boil water and if it weren't for her, this whole little empire we have built here would come a tumblin' to the ground.

So, if she want's an old snort, a snort she shall have. Lord knows she has given me enough tractors; and most of 'em she even knows about!

Hey ya Allan, my last girlfriend has horses. My vet took me off to the side and said, "Once a woman gets a horse, you'll never do better than second ever again". Is my ex-girlfriend. LOL.

Hey guess what? Got a call today, them Amish finally got started on the new 40x60. 4 of them got the poles, side rails and trusses up today. Warm next few days - let's get that concrete poured too. Bout time, I've been waitin for weeks for them to show up. Tractors are settin out. Killed the battery on the Deere when the temps were zero-ish last week (won't use ether and didn't add anti-gel). The Allis has moisture oozing out of the PTO and I'm pretty sure moisture in the mag. Room for the Massey and Case too. And the pickups. I am excited about gettin home to Indiana first AM tomorrow for the holiday weekend. I'm on-call here in Illinois until 7AM, then hittin the interstate. Annnnnd, I hear these Amish are using a bobcat with an auger, but won't touch a ladder, and won't talk on the phone. I hear they're gonna goof on the doors, and gotta stop them in their tracks. Told them the overheads go on each end off to the same side so can pass through with bays on the other side - they want to come in 10' from the side towards the center. NO!! NO!! NO!!, but they won't talk on the phone. Never will figure them guys out, but right now don't care - just get the darned thing up so I can get the iron sunk for the 5 ton hoist. I am excited.

Oh yeah, is (was) fun to watch the smile on the face of the better-half galloping around - is (was) worth it.

Well, with me, it all started out innocently enough. I grew up on a dairy farm, and my dad always had a soft spot for horses. So we always had 2 or three around, and what with the pasture for cows and hay for cows, it really didn't cost anything to have a couple of them around to clean up the excess. My sisters rode them often, I rode them occasionally, and everything was fine. When I got serious about the girl of my dreams, she batted those big eyelashes at me and said, "You know, I'd like to have a place in the country so I could have a horse". The only thing I heard was "place in the country", and I was so thrilled that she didn't want the bright lites that I completely spaced on the "horse" part.

Fast forward 34 years. We've always lived in the country. She now has about a dozen horses, mostly Paso Finos, a few Walkers, and our daughter's jumping Thorobred. She's been scraping teeth all these years to support her horse habit; she trains every baby, and gets top money for them when she sells; she's always happy to have me help muck the stalls, but she'll do it by herself if need be; she's never complained about my tractors (there's about 7 right now, but 3 will sell when I get them fixed), and will hold the light when I'm working on them if need be. She's actually dissapointed when I come home from an auction with an empty trailer. Last but not least, the horses keep her active enough that she looks pretty darn good in a pair of Levi's, even at 56.

All in all, its been a pretty good life, an it ain't over yet, thank goodness. I think the horses have been more of an asset than a liability, all things considered. There's a lot worse things in this world than having a happy wife.

Well my wife turned me into a cowboy,I can think of a lot worse things to spend my money on and trust me I have. The only condition was that I get to buy a thoroughbred and every wheelbarrow of manure I pitch I hang onto the dream of breeding the next Kentucky Derby winner, yes it is a far fetched dream, but one thing I do know is that I have a better shot than somebody with no horses, land, barns, tractors, etc, etc, etc.
Oh Yeah a new dually is in the works next fall.

Tell her your IH tractors have plenty of horses under the hood. Therefor, you already have horses, and you don't need any more (unless red paint is part of the deal, of course)!!

It always starts with, "Honey, I've been thinking about getting a horse." And then it's adding just one more...well maybe just a few more...and then breeding to have even more...!

But, the good news is that you can make a small fortune in horses. The bad news is that you have to start with a big fortune.

By the way; my Wife goes down to the APHA Trail Ride at Fort Robinson every Fall. If by that time you are short of horses, she could probably haul a couple down, and take your lil' red H in trade.

Good Luck; I gotta go and put a new wrap on one of our yearlings that tore up his leg in the corral fence a month ago. (True story...It's amazing the new skills you acquire when you own horses!)

Guys,

It is worse than I thought. Now she is using words like Dressage, Hanoverians of Germany, snaffle bits, check-rein and English Saddle.

I've caught her in two chat rooms talking freight fees and dietary supplements.

I’m just afraid that next she will be trying to tell me that grass can be considered hay and that it should be put up in small square bales.

At this point, I will know things are definitely out of control and that I should consult a good divorce lawyer, because, I vividly recall my first wife loading everything in the Impala and leaving.

And, yes it’s true, there are times when I really do miss that darned old car! :>)

Hey allan, let her have a horse, but whatever you do dont let her get interested in dressage!

increadibly boring days out they can be, and its a very opinianated sport - my mum does it, a few weeks ago went to a show, came last in 1 class when the horse went well, went in the next class at the next level up on the same day, with a different judge, same horse, won.

Shell soon be frustrated with dressage if she starts it.

Get her into eventing. Eventers do it in 3 different ways on 3 different days you know, and just think you could be doing it with her!

Hannoverians? You do have a problem! They are the equivilent of needing to buy a fully restored, 1958, John Deere 630 high crop on LPG! If you can get her to consider something a little cheaper, like say Paso Finos or Tennessee Walkers or a good grade of Arabians, that would be something!

One thing you really ought to investigate though, are the possible premiums for some kinds of shows! Some types of events can payout premiums that make the plastic $5.00 trophies at tractor pulls seem trivial! Professional grade hunter-jumper events for example!

Hey JDG. The old saying goes if you want to go broke by a horse. The horse cost 500 to 10000 bucks but the saddle and tack cost just as much. Then you need a trailer and then you need a truck to pull it. Most of us here on YT have the truck but if you don't that van is much cheaper than a pickup. But if your wife lets you have your hobby then let her have her hobby. They say never keep score in a Marriage but I have learned different. I farm a small plot of land and bale hay for people. I get money for bailing hay and all but if I spend 100 bucks on hay eqiupment she spends the same amount at wally world. I say I got 150 bucks back as fees but that does not matter I spent money and so did she. If the better half can make her horses pay then go for it. Or if your wife has a hobby that is not that costly let her have it. I know guys that have wives that like to shop and that is a very costly hobby, let her have the horse if she will let you have your junk farm equipment. For better or worse and for junk Iron and stupid Nags also. Moose Ps I have Horses also and I have Beagles that I hunt. And I have an understanding wife.

Horses are edible and the French'll eat em. I've seen more people lose money on horses than I have known lose it all in cassinos. No matter how much money you put into a horse... it dies. A tractor, land, almost anything is a better investment.... but in an effort to not lose her version of half O' everything you own.. it may be the wisest to offer to name it.

PS paint it red.

Horses eat hay. Hay grows in fields. Hay has to be cut. Cutting takes mower. A mowet needs a tractor. Hay has to be raked. Raking has to be done with another tractor. Hay has to be baled, You need a baler. A baler needs another tractor. a tractor. Hay has to be raked. You will need a raking tractor. Hay has to ne hauled. You need wagons. Guess what you need to pull wagons? You may be lucky!!

It could also give you more reason to use your tractors. Like scoop the manure with your loader and dump it in to a manure spreader that you could pull with another tractor. Might even be a good reason to get another tractor or two.

We had as many as ten hores at onetime.
Now we're down to six but have over thirty llamas and only on five acres. It's not so bad, she works hard to raise extra money for the feed and vet bill.
So far, I have twelve tractors. A little uneven, isn't it. She doesn't gripe when I bring another tractor home because, if she does, I remind her of the last llama she bought.

See where this is going. When she buys a horse, you have an excuse to buy another tractor.

She could be demanding lots of clothes-and the dinners out to go with them-, or furniture-and the house to put them in.

Let's see.....First it's the horse. Then a trailer. Then a new dually to PULL the trailer. Then a barn. And then all those western clothes. Later it's the whoppin' vet bills. Does anyone associated with tractors find a excuse to complain about NEEDING a new(er) dually pickup truck? Unless the one you got is brand new I mean? Of course, those times when there is a conflict of interest---ie she has a horse show or event and it's the same day and time that you want to haul in a new (to you) tractor, but think about it! You DON'T get good excuses like that everyday!

Ain't that the truth. And if they throw you, you know it was your fault, and not a bird flying up in front of you. The little woman fell of her horse a couple of years ago, broke her back, and will be feeling that one the rest of her life. Not the horses fault, she just plain fell off. Coulda happened to anybody, but if she hadn't been on the horse..... well you get the picture. Still like the red tractors better. Later, Harley
