this not tractors- but I need the printer to send pics. does anyone out there know where to buy and how to clean ink cart. so when you refill them they will work-- this seems to be kept a secret by the makers-- but if anyone knows it would be doing the rest of us a great service and make for a great money saver. hope you all had a good holiday BLW

Secret #1 is to refill them BEFORE they run dry. Once dry, the little tiny nozzle firing circuits fry or the nozzles clog up with dry ink. You can sometimes recover from a clogged nozzel by blotting it with a wet paper towel. (the ink is water soluble). Do not wipe as this will grind more stuff into the nozzles. You will eventually get tired of refilling them and realize the convenience of just popping in a new one. I now use Walmart or local drug store machine to make prints. 29 cents for a 4x6. Hard to beat when compared to price of ink cartridges and photo paper. You can up load images to Walmart and they will mail them to your house for a small fee. Worth it if you live a long way out.

Go to EBay. Do a search in the search box. Type in your printer brand name (EPSON) Modle # (980) and the word INK. My search would look like this: EPSON 980 INK I buy from "USA Ink Catridge" and have had no problems. Nobody but nobody buys their ink anywhere else, do they? For $20.00 you can buy more cartridges than you can hold in both hands.

I've got a HP 722C. It came with small cartridges. 19 vs. 40 ml if I remember right. But they didn't try to hide it, the volume was printed right on the label. I always buy mine from Office Depot now. Less than half the HP price. And they come with a alcohol prep pad to clean the print head and a postage-paid envelope to recycle the empty one. Jim.

I have a 722C also. Great printers, can't be beaten for quality of prints on photo paper. You can't tell a print from a photo when behind glass in a frame.

If you are near an Office Max rather than an Office Depot, you can exchange the empty cartridge for a ream of paper. Office Max will also beat anyone elses price--I think by 10% but am not sure on that. Also real deals if they are out of stock of the cartridge you need and it has to be ordered.

I have had some success with certain makes and models - others don't work worth a darn! You can clean the print head, if it is part of the cartridge by setting cartridge in a cup with 1/8" or so of rubbing alcohol in the bottom and soaking for a few minutes. Alternately, clean print head with a q-tip moistened with alcohol. dry on ap paper towell. Best if you don't run cartridge dry before refilling. Allow ink to set in cartridge for a while before trying to print - allowing ink to settle in print cavity, and bubbles to settle out. Try a couple of head cleaning cycles to get ink started. Some ink kits came with a syringe to use to try to suck some ink into the head after refilling. Best if you buy a kit for your particular cartidge, follow instructions, and keep extra equipment for use later - when you are buying straight ink. (Don't swap colors when filling a color cartridge - makes an awful printout!)

I tried refilling cartridges, but it never seems to work- last time, I got a gray haze over the whole document. I gave up and now I just buy a new HP cartridge when the old one gives out.

So, I guess being impatient and just stabbing the enter key over and over again is just counterproductive. Shame on me.

Is the printer reporting a problem? Or just not printing well?

Most ink printers can take a new ink cartridge or you can replace the entire print head (obviously costs a lot more for the head, usually they're good for several cartridges before they start to go).

Some printer manufacturers detect that you've refilled the ink and refuse to work, they require a new $$$ cartridge of their own make.

A lot of opinions, but no real answers.

I can't help you with cleaning the interior of the cartridge, but the outter portion can be cleaned with alcohol.

The key to refilling cartridges is to refill them before they run very low on ink. That way the remaining ink doesn't get thick, etc.

I keep factory cartridges around for printing photo prints, and refills around for everything else. Tremendous savings to refill your own.

As far as buying a cheap printer and tossing it, you usually get the quality you pay for. I've not seen actual Lexmark prints, but they have a terrible reputation for being problematic.

Just my opinion of course.

Depends on the quality you need. We've had absolutely no luck getting good color out of refills. However, if you aren't picky they might work for you. We send our photos to Walmart's online photo printing site and have them print them up for us. Works great, not expensive. About $2.50 for an 8x10, real cheap for 4x6s.

Just go get a $30 lexmark printer and throw it away when the cartridge runs out. Its cheaper than buying $50 worth of cartridges.

The cartridges you get with a new printer are "starter cartridges", with very little ink in them. In the long run, you'd probably save money by buying the full cartridges.

Supposedly there is a lot less ink in the original cartridge when you buy a printer. I stated the same idea (buying new printer instead of cartridge) to my sophmore at IU and he immediately "set me straight." I have never tried to find out if he was right or not. Where would I get "generic cartridges?" Later, Mike

I get my generic ink jet cartridges at the local discount store, but a Google search shows many online suppliers of generic cartridges.

Walmart sold some printers for $25 and you had to buy the cartridges separate. I ask how full cartridges are before I buy.

If using Win 98, there is an option "Cleaning print cartridges" under printer services.....Start, Settings, Control panel, Printer, Properties, Services, etc..... ..

I use low cost ($10 color $9 black) new generic cartridges. I have used these things for years without a problem,,and with the low price I feel no need to mess with trying to refill a used cartridge. Check one of the online printer cartridge outfits to see which model/brand printers use the low cost cartridges. Ink cartridge cost was a big factor in choosing the Epson CX 3200 all in one printer/copyer/scanner I use.
