I have a 1961 Farmall 140. Just finished flushing transmission, it had signs of water contamination so I drained and filled it twice to flush it out good. Last time I drained it I shined a light in it and did not see any sign of rust or debris. Tractor was never run hard during it's life so I think I'm ok. I want to drain & re-fill again, I have been using tractor trans&hyd. fluid. Should I switch to a good gear oil? If so what weight? It has a pto & pully housing, According to manual it holds about 5 qts total. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

Agree with Sammy, Get you some Case/IH Hy-Tran and use nothing else. It has special additive package to help with your water problem.

Hi Scott.
The manual calls for Hy/trans fluid. so you are using the correct fluid. When you say you are seeing signs of water contamination what are you seeing? White milky looking or is your fluid just a yellow frothy looking?

Thanks Butcher, actually, alittle of both, it would seep out of the trans when parked for the night, if I rode it in high gear on road it would froth up and come out of top around gear shift, when I drained it, more came out than the recommended 5qts. Since I changed it, hasn't leaked a drop, I even opened while running down road, seems to be plenty of splash and it is still clean. Don't think it has been changed since My grandfather's days and that has been 15 yrs since He had it! If He even did it! Nice running tractor, no smoke at all, no noises or leaks to speak of, would like to restore to like new, really enjoying My first attempt, I like the forums here at classic tractors, really find a lot of useful tips and help just reading the posts! If I have any questions, will not hesitate to ask! 'Later, Scott

Use Case/IH Hy-Tran.
