OT: Mice in the Chicken Coop?

What's the best way to trap mice in a chicken coop? It seems like I'm providing room and board to every field mouse in the county. Last night I left a empty 5 gallon bucket sitting inside...this morning I had 13 mice in it. Don't want to leave poison or spring traps inside with the hens, and hesitate to lock the cat inside. Is there a good procedure for making a "bucket trap"? (Maybe just a good recipe for fried chicken would solve the problem, but I sure enjoy those fresh eggs.)
Thanks and Happy New Year to all of you...☺☺☺

Rau,

I dont know why this works but when I moved out to my house in the rurals, the previous owner had all these coffee cans and jars around the perimeter of the house. They were about half filled with linseed oil. I didnt think much of it and threw most of them away. Well, wasnt I shocked when I found one packed to the top with dead field mice one day! I dont know why but the mice climb in and maybe get stoned from the fumes then they dive in head first and drown. Seems to work really good around my house.

Have you thought about electronic rodent repellers. I know they keep the mice out of my shop in the winter. I'm not sure if chickens have the hearing range to be effected by the repellers.

If you caught 13 mice in one night in a 5 gal. bucket, I believe you've found the answer. Now you just need a market.

I love my "Tin Cat" traps. Have had very good luck just placing them next to the wall where the mice run. Don't need any bait and will catch a lot of mice before you have to empty, which should be a long way from your chicken house and with your hungry cats.

I would try using spring traps using singed bacon or peanunt butter, with several traps hidden under a box heavy enough that the chickens couldn't move it and spaced an inch or so off the floor. I would also set the box near the wall where mice are likely to run and by any place you think the mice might be hiding.

You also might try lifting up and suspending the feeders at night.

I have had good success using both bacon and peanut butter for bait. I prefer to trap mice rather than poison them, especially around animals I care about and/or might eat. Good luck!

Rauville: The "old standby" for a bucket trap is to run a wire across the top, and put a paper towel tube (or a 2-liter soda bottle or similar) on the wire. Smear peanut butter in a ring around the center of the tube, and put a small board for a ramp leading up to the tube. Put a few inches of water in the bottom, then leave it where the mice will find it. They will walk out on the tube to get to the peanut butter, and will slip off the tube when it rotates and fall in. This trap is standard procedure at most hunting camps--it"s self-resetting and deadly! Put anti-freeze in the water, and you can catch mice all year "round, though I wouldn"t recommend it with pets around.

keep useing the bucket, just put about 3-4 inches of water in the bottom. Or you could also buy a live trap for them they make a number of good one. Guess I"m lucky if a mouse is seen in my chicken house they don"t last long because my chickens love to eat them.

Bucket trap sounds good to me. I haven't got any mice in my chicken house either, I dunno if the chickens eat them or the cats do, but the cats and chickens seem to get along pretty good, maybe they tag team?

Dig a hole 3 feet deep. Put in hot ashes at bottom of hole. Line top of hole with peas. When mice come to take a pea, kick them in the "ash" hole!!!
