I have a 656IH that is being stuborn. It will start and run nice for about 200 yards then goes to like half trottle with very low power and then stops about 800 yards. Can pull choke and black smoke but doesn't seem to help. Will start and go through the same routine after it cools down. Changed coil, points and condenser, cleaned carb., checked timing and now ready to get dymamite and blow it to hell where it belongs. Any suggestions other than the dymamite.

Hey Ronnie, sounds like a fuel/air delivery problem to me also. I only wanted to add that this day in age new electric parts doesn't mean they are good. I've bought Borg-Warner and Standard and other "top" brands that were defective. Anything from distributor caps to hi-dollar fuel injection parts. Guess what I'm sayin is get the ohm meter and other diagnostic equip. out if fuel/air problem isn't it. Please give me a hollar if you decide to go the dynamite route tho, after a day like today I need some stress relief myself & would like to watch Good luck. Fred

Ronnie: Dynamite is definately what you should do, but remove that gas engine, and dynamite only the engine. Then find a good diesel repower. Those 6 cylinder gas IH tractors were never worth a tinkers damn, plus one had to be a millionaire to fuel them. Most of them have never seen a whole lot of use as of the afore mentioned reasons. A good diesel repower, and you'll have close to a new tractor.

Do you have an oil bath air cleaner? Real cold where you are? Check for water in the oil bath. Pulls up into air filter and chokes off. Long shot.

Could be your carburetor is icing up. Get it thoroughly warm before putting under load. Put a blanket over the radiator/hood. Also there may be some provision on the carburetor to add heat. My 3020 does. See your Operators Manual.

Good luck,
Roger

Ron,

Sounds like you've covered the bases. However, if you are getting black smoke when you pull the choke, sounds like you have fuel and it must be an ignition thing.

Is that ignition switch getting hot and going south on ya? How about the air cleaner? Is it plugged?

Dunno,

Allan

Just because you're getting black exhaust doesn't mean you're getting good fuel flow. (The choke is cutting off air flow through the carb) I'd start by looking at a stoppage in the gas tank or fuel filter.

Your description sounded all too much like a fuel problem. JMHO John

My 666 did that when I first got it, and I played around with it for hours, cleaning sediment bowl screen, flushing tank, etc. Was getting set to take the carb off to clean it out and was now suspecting the fuel shutoff solenoid and it hit me....on my old 2N Ford, there's a screen in the fuel inlet elbow to the carb. Sure enough, turned out to be just a bunch of crud in the screen. Cleaned that out and she purrs like a kitten, well, a really loud kitten, maybe!

Sounds like someone's been lurking on another board!

We keep nitrogen on hand to pressure test refridgeration equipment anyway.

Get any good stuff for Christmas? John

I agree with indy dirt farmer. You must have a fuel delivery problem. You have good compression and more than likely good ignition.Since you cant run out of compression or ignition{normally} then the motor is starving for fuel.
