I'm looking at a used GMC truck with 112000 miles on it. Truck looks, runs, and drives good.

Is the 7.4 liter a good motor? How many miles can I expect to get out of it?

This will be my first GMC so if anyone know of what to watch for, I'd appreciate it.

i have a 99 crewcab duelly. it has 70000 on it now. bought new in 99. the first month i had it drove to montana with the gooseneck an 2 tractors weighing in at 30000. great power. the sucking sound you hear is the fuel goin through the fuel line. i average 10 weighing in at 30k all this pickup does is pull my show tractors around. any how it used a quart to 600 that trip an everytime since then, i ask the dealer in montana about it using oil an he told me that was good. factory specs say that it will burn a quart to 500 in heavy useage. if not pulling the trailer will not burn a ounce. the only trouble i have had has been the transfer case once, wheel seal once. an alot of fuel. enpty well get around 12.
i have also put a phase 3 power chip in it, i run duel 3 inch straight pipes out the back, it will rattle windows, an a kn free flow air filter. power is great. run down the road at any speed i want loaded, when loaded an rolling good you dont sneak up on anyone. they can hear ya acomin

What are they asking? We have 2 2000 3500s with flat bed, toolboxes, gooseneck hitches and duallies, both with 454s and automatic transmissions. Both in good shape with 114K and 135K, been sitting for sale at $7800 for 4 months. Nobody wants them because they are gas and 2WD.

The current 454 has a bad habit of blowing the intake gasket and frying the fuel pump. The intake gasket seems to be a one time fix, but the fuel pumps seem to go out out every 30K - 40K miles. Both are somewhat expensive repairs.

This is the 2500 HD model (SLT) trim level with leather seat, in-dash CD, tow package, 2 batteries, clearance lights, sliding rear window, manual transmission with 4x4 and they are asking 8800.

I have not owned one so take this with a grain of salt...

All my friends (some die hard chevy guys) claim they really use oil. They are solid engines and i have a lot of repect for them but they will use oil. They also are extremely thirsty!!!! Really depends on what you are going to use it for. If pulling and a lot of highway miles I would think diesel cost of ownership would make more sense. BUT NOT A GM DIESEL!!!!! !!!! preferrably Dodge Cummins or Ford if a Dodge cannot be had.

Cummins in a Dodge will get 20 mpg empty and 14-16 pulling, at least that is what I get.

but that ole' 454 is an awesome engine with lots of power. If I had to own a gasser (terrible thought) I would get a Chevy with the 454.

Good luck!

Phil

I've got a '98 Chevy K3500, single rears with the Vortec 454 (7.4, auto tranny I like, and I had my doubts, but has been good so far(I have this truck for 1 year today as a matter of fact) Good pulling truck for me...I don't need a diesel...$$$ I will say this...be prepared to feed that horse! I've only made 1 longer trip with it and I got 14 mpg normal driving I'd guess 12 or so...tote around 12-14k lbs and watch the guage drop. Yes it will handle more, but thats what I tend to haul.

yeah man, 7.4L equlas a 454ci powerplant. very respected by all Chevy/GMC fans. 122000 miles, not bad at all lots of life left in that truck. my uncle had a truck with a 5.3 that had over 250,000 miles on it and it was only a 1990 model, it would still burn a tire every now and again! but over all sounds like a good buy. What year is it, dual rear tires or no, 4x4 or not, what will it be used for, ect. take all these things into consideration before buying.

Merry Christmas!

A fellow I work with has a 98 2500 Chevy with the 7.4 motor. It is a little over 390,000 miles. Most of them highway miles, but atleast 50% of that pulling a tandem trailer. Never did anything to the 7.4 or the 4L80E transmission except oil and filter changes. The first 150,000 on mineral oil,and the rest on Mobil 1 synthetic. The engine still runs like new and uses no oil. It is starting to cold start a bit slower, might be time for some injector work.
I have a 92 3500 with the 7.4 and 4L80E. bought it at 142,000 and now have 160 on it,engine runs great, another one on Mobil 1 synthetic oil. mine is a short trip farm pickup. Both are 4X4 and make a best of 13 mpg with 4.10 tow package axles.

I have an 89 Chevy with the 7.5 (454) and it's been a good motor. Thirsty, but good. Of course, mine hasn't got anything like 112,000 on it. In fact, I just rolled over 60,000 this summer.

Other than a rear main seal that leaks about half a quart between oil changes, a spark module and a water pump, no complaints.
