My tilt steering is loose and Ive heard several times about theighing up the two bolts in the column. How involved is this job?

I agree,take it to a mechenic..alan.....there are 4 screws in there.but you cant get to the fourth with out tearing more apart.i tightened the 3 i could get at and it worked fine.had a heck of a time with the dimmer switch.got pi**ed and took it to the garage..... god has blessed you if you can do it in 20 mins.

The number of screws thing:

It depends on the year and the model change. The older ones had three, newer models now have four.

Yes, the dimmer, the tilt and the ignition have all got to be "timed" to work together.

if on the steering wheel it says AIR BAG let a gm mechanic do it.

There are 4 bolts down inside. Tool needed is a thinwall inverted torx socket. takes about 2 hours . It's worth it to have someone else do it that way you will have someone else for your wife to blame when the dimmer switch doesn't work!!

You'll need a 1/4 drive E7 or E8 female torx socket to tighten the 4 bolts below the tilt knuckle.As for the pivot pins you can get by with a small slide hammer and a machine screw with the right threads.A press plate tool is also needed.The other "floor board full" of tools you'll need are pretty common.It's awfull tricky to get the dimmer switch stuff lined up. Mechanics familar with the job can do it in about an hour,I have seen certified techs take as long as 4 hours and lose all of there religon.A qualified independant garage will usually charge about $45, well worth it to most people.

Hi,

Somebody told you wrong; they were thinking of the pivot pins, not the bowl screws, of which there are three.

The job is not too bad, you'll have to get down under the Turn Signal switch. The three little screws hold the upper bowl in place. They take a torex bit.

You'll need the special tool to unload the wheel/ignition lock plate, however. It's about a 20 minute job.

Heck,

Now that I think about it, I think you have to pull those pivot pins (which also take a special tool) and that the three screws that always get loose are holding down the lower bowl.

Geeeze! Haven't pulled one in 5 or 6 years and my, how the cobwebs filled up my ol' pee-brain! :>)

Never been that deep in a gm tilt,but had one done,mechanic charged me $80 to tighten'er up..

Yes,

That sounds about right if a guy has to go all the way to the bottom. Pays something like an hour and a half.

Three little screws and it is those guys that always come loose, seems like.

The tilt steering on my GN did the same thing. Had to work under the steering lock, cruise/wiper/high low beam linkages after they were removed. The tilt pins were special. The accessable one pulled easy but the other I finally drove out with a punch instead of pulling it. Tightened the three screws with locktite after shoving the steering together again. Worked for two days than the steering lock linkage came undone. Gave up and had the local GM trained mechanic with the proper tools repair it in less than an hour. Had to go all the way to the bottom again. I wasted 1/2 a day and alot of temper.

Yes, I agree with ya, I guess. If you've never been in to one of these rascals, maybe it is just better to stay outta there.

Lots of pieces, special tools and lots of things that have to be timed correctly again on the way back out.
