When setting the tappets on a SM or 400 Farmall
what is the best setting, on TD, retarded, or advance 20 degrees. Also, will a head from a 400 International fit a SM Farmall if they both have regular pistons. I understand the fire crater pistons may sit higher than the regualur pistons and the fire crater pistons may hit the head. Also it always gives the sitting for the tappets with the engine beening hot, can I set it cold and allow for the expandsion for the heat, which would be a wider gap.

I was always told (years ago) to set the valve clearances on overhead valve engines with the engine HOT and RUNNING (at slow idle). This has always worked very well for me on tractor, truck, marine and automobile engines. This method has also sometimes solved "valve setting", "hard starting" or "poor running" problems caused by setting the valves by other methods. The only engines that I am aware of that require the valve clearances to be set when "cold" are some of the alumonum block, air cooled engines (some only the intake valves, not all of them though). Most engines that I am aware of (with cast iron blocks and heads) require a larger clearance if setting the valve clearance "cold". This is especally true for the exhaust valves. The exhaust valves get a lot hotter than the bolck, cyl. head, rocker arms, tappets, or push rods and expand more. Lots of different opinions and requirements on this issue. I also like to check the manufactures specifications, procedures and recommendations first. Good luck on whatever you decide to do.

i think tdc is recommended or setting valve clearance. you can add a little space if adjusting cold and then check a couple hot to see how it worked out. dont know about the head swap. lucass

Yes, TDC on compression stroke is the usual spot. If your setting is about 0.003 more that the hot setting you should be very close when the engine is hot. If you begin to experience hard starting it's likely they clearance is set too close.
