Howdy,

Since there was a request for more pics I did some diggin. I could only find one with any of the farm in it. Others were of my R when we had it tore in half. This one has my only red tractor doin what it loves, cultivating corn. I think I took this one in 2003. The old barn is in the upper left of the picture with my great grandad's old house in front of it. I think that field has 21 acres. It's our biggest. God bless.

Hey Guy,

This is so darned neat to see how other people do it.

This first picture is the smallest tractor I've ever been on and this is the type of cultivator that I learned on back in the '50s.

Second picture is of a young feller cultivating with a cultivator like the one that I used at the end just before the blessed farm sale.

Neat stuff, this corn and tractors. :>)

Just saw a Nice 1952 IHC H sell yesterday 12/16/04 for $3500. I don't know weather the realatives were fighting or not, Or wheather they were even relatives but ther were 2 bidders and they hung right in there. A young lady finally wound up with it. And after the bidding she breathed a sigh of relief.

Hi Dale,

Bless her heart; I think she was buying emotion rather than that tractor. Don't think there is an H still standing worth much more than $2K.

'Course, I'm the guy that has just this side of $6K invested in mine with a wide front, live hydraulics and the Farmhand loader.

We all independently know where our road is leading, I guess. :>)

Now those are beautiful pictures, especially of that H!, I wonder what ever did happen to all the old cultivators?. I had seen the picture of that H over on RedPowerMagazine the other day, and was wondering what kind of crop that is?. Thats a nice black stripe IH you have there!, what model is it?. I love seeing nice pictures!.

Hi Jon,

I'm pretty sure that the H is in a soybean field, isn't he? When I was a boy and going to school down at Omaha, those fellas in that area planted their soybeans in rows at that time.

Neither one of the tractors are mine, just wanted to show what I used to use and pulled those shots from the gallery. The blackstripe is a 1466 with an 8 row cultivator.

And to think, back in the 50s we used to cultivate corn here in upstate NY with an Allis'Chalmers B with a mounted single row cultivator!! We wuz so poor we couldn't even pay attention. My Dad had about 50 acres of tillable land and we milked 8 to 10 head of cows (by hand) and were able to make a living; barely. He finally had to go to work for "Generous Electric" to make ends meet.

I don't think a lot of small farmers had a lot of money in the 50's I know we didn't, but we always had food on the table. As I look back, Dad did a good job taking care of us. I didn't appreciate it much then but sure do now. Dad and Mom are gone now, and I am the old man. Stan

Fellas, you have no idea how relieved these pictures made me feel. Four months ago, out of the blue, we started another career, market-farming on a few acres in central Alabama to sell at a farmstand and at farmers' markets. We come from the city side of life, and so at the moment this is sort of a waking dream, day after day trying to imagine what the farm will look like. And as I talk to people about what tractor to buy, one fellow after another my age and older (the other side of 50) tells me stories like yours about how they farmed as youngsters driving Farmalls and what great workhorses they were. And how they might be just the ticket for our little operation. But, being such small and light tractors compared to the others, I couldn't quite understand or appreciate their value until I saw these pictures this morning and read you guys's posts about farming with them back in the 50s. Ah-ha!! So THAT'S what it looks like! The off-center thing really DOES work! and they DO cultivate like that. Yeah!! So right now I'm dedicating this farm to all of you out there who might have had it a bit rough back then but were glad for what you had (or maybe are glad NOW for what you had then.) I'm hoping a little of that spirit rubs off on me and settles over our humble farm. What goes around is comin' around. Thanks a whole lot! Now to get back to the Farmall ads. I was thinking Cub, but now that I see the H in action, hmmmm. . .
Bill

Hi Bill,

Ya lucky duck! LOL!

I don't know how big of an operation you have and I can only speak from my own experience.

But I gotta tell ya, an H is a very small tractor and for all intents and purposes is just about usless for anything other than that 2-row cultivator, drag harrow, a rotary hoe, or draggin' the front yard.

I think I'd look at something bigger if you have any sizeable ground to work at all. A 656 diesel is a good all-around workhorse, in my humble opinion.

Hi Allan,
Great picture, thanks. You're right -- more capabilities. The fact is, we'll need an FEL real soon for turning and transporting compost and other stuff. So the cost-effective buy is the mid-size utility type, I guess.

We do need a mower, though, so maybe a Cub. . .

Any 656s out there for sale? There's an IH 574 nearby; I'm told it's a good tractor. What do you think?

Thanks,
Bill

Hi Bill

All up to how many acres you have and how much time.

I farm with WD 's have two running and two that are in repair. 2 farmall H's one super with step pistions and 300 IHC head so she about 35-40 HP. But I would say you need live PTO or like the allis wd have a trans. clutch. 656 is a good tractor if you find a good one. Cost of a good wide front around here is 4-5 K so for a tractor of that size they are a little pricey compair to some. I'm sure you can fine a Good H for around 1000. WD Allis Chalmers 1200- 1500 wide front on any of them would add 400- 600 more. Listen we have a wd 1951 or so, 53 years old and allot of time and she runs ok ( she is the one I bale with). I'm thinking I'll get a about 500 more hours out of her before mains and complete head redone, or strip her for parts, replaced a king pin in rearend some 15 years ago. I was half way worn. Some of these old small tractor were made for war time they had no idea how long WWII was going to last and made the best they could make, too last . I say; mabe I'm wrong they stop making good tractors around 1970, but I see some of these guys talking about newer one and they are running ok. I would say to you be friend a person close to you and learn from any one you can about engines and start looking and asking. Would hate to see someone get burn on an junker, and there are allot of them out there. Every tractor has its troubles things you not going to like but it is your opinion that counts. One last thing if you can live with one tractor you better have a back up, if your doing row crop and planting corn and spraying tilling etc, what a pain to have to take time to switch equipment around. I 'm looking at a tractor for baling, mowing, raking, tedding, and hauling hay . WD's do this all ok , but the H's are only good for raking and tedding and hauling. I need to get just a bit bigger for baling around 70-80 plus horsepower to pull baler wagon with 100 + bales on these hills, WD 35 HP is only able to pull 50 bales than it is time to head to level ground. Look and talk and learn what you would like to have, don't be scaired (sp) of a 50,40,30 + years old tractor if run right they last and last.

Have a Good One !!

Teddy
