Howdy folks,

I took a quick photo of our farm the other day when I got the pic of my R with the wood splitter. So, I thought I'd share that too. The white barn is our hay barn. It also houses the tractors and some other equipment. The older barn in the photo is our tobacco barn. It used to be a hay barn for loose hay. It houses all the old machinery (corn binder, shredder, thresher, drills, etc.) The small building too its right is where the corn picker stands. It used to be a corn crib. There is one more field to the right of the picture that can't be seen. Good old Southern Ohio farmland. Sits right on top of a hill and has plenty of good red dirt drag the plows down. Also close to bedrock in places so we do bend and break some plowshares. But it's a blessing to work this land in West Union, OH. God bless.

Beautiful scene. Reminds me of our farm in during the winter back in the 30s & 40s when I was a kid.
Lots of great memories and some not so great, but I would not trade them for anything. the only thing missing is a team of horse and a wagon. I am sure you will get back to the land. Thanks Chuck

will you still raise tobacco now-after the buyout? Looked on the map not to far from maysville-used to teach across the river in a little town called brooksville-by the way when did you take the picture with that much snow? Please keep above the river if you don't mind

Howdy jfky,

I took the picture Wednesday afternoon. We were gettin lake effect snow off lake michigan. Don't believe it got too much further south. We will not be movin on with the backer after the buyout. Down to just 1/2 an acre as it is and to be honest, it's pretty much done for the heck of it. Can't remember a year we've turned any profit over the last few. God bless.

Hey, I saw that you were in West Union, OH. My uncle has a farm up there. Double A Stock Farms, his last name is Akin. Don't know if you heard of it, but interesting none the least. I farm in Central TX and I will have to say that it is pretty up there.

Howdy Tex,

Boy what a small world it is! I would never guess that Buck had a nephew on this forum. Yep I know who Buck is and know his farm very well. Matter of fact I live just about five minutes from that farm. For the past few years I've worked in tobacco for Mark Carrington, the fella who leases Buck's tobacco base. Beautiful farm but awful close to rock I've heard. He has the nicest tobacco barn I've ever hung in. Real great guy too. God bless.

What a beautiful sight...I know a lot of hard work, equipment breakdowns and hot days have happened over this land. But admiring a picture like this and with the pride of ownership makes it all worth while.

Howdy Brian,

You sure got that right. This farm is at least 4 generations old and might be 5, not sure. I've put many hard hours as have so many of my relatives and neighbors. Wouldn't trade if for the world. Sad thing is, I'll probably be leaving it soon. Since the kind of job I'm after means a move I'll have to leave it in the hands of my folks and hope to return someday. Almost makes me hate this country sometimes. Free yes, but only if you have money and ditch your heritage to get it. But I'll enjoy it while I can. God bless.

I don't want to get to personal, but why do you have to leave the farm for a job? It looks like like the land is pretty good so couldn't a local off-farm job be good enough. Its got to hurt to leave this place, but good luck anyhow.

Howdy brian,

Well, it's a pretty long story but I didn't really get so tightly bound to my grandpa's farm until after his death in '02. Of course by that time I was halfway through college. I was on my way to a degree (which I now have) in weather forecasting. Then I got so darned connected to it that I've had nothing but internal fights with myself since graduating back in June. Then there's my folks, bless their hearts. I'm the last in the family and the only one who seems to have hopes of makin somethin of myself and finally giving them some sense of accomplishment as parents. I'm a Christian and I take that honor your parents thing seriously. So it is a big complex mess for me. I never did all the farming. Before grandad passed on he had already had a neighbor leasing most of it. I just butted in more and more over my college years. I travelled 200 miles each weekend down and up in order to do farm work. But the line of work I've chosen requires a move. I want to work for one of those private forecasting places that do stuff for power companies, shipping firms, etc. and none of them are remotely close to Southern Ohio. I mean, c'mon we have an unemployment rating of 2nd in the state I believe. There's nothing here but a couple of poor farmers and welfare. It's like I said, complex. So I just pray for the Lord to lead me where he wants and hope to someday be able to farm that land as my grandpa did. I do restorations so it would only take money and time to have that place back in shape. Just don't know. A lot for a young pup of 23 to worry about ain't it? God bless.

Howdy Val,

Depends on which house you mean. There are three. One is in the field behind the old barn. It is deteriorated severely. It was my great grandad's. Built if for his family when the older home had too many people in it. Relatives and such. The original house (built in 1850's I believe) is obscurred by the white barn. It is good shape but no one lives in it. Grandad and grandma were there till grandad died in 2002. Grandma has alsheimers and lives in a nursing home. Third house is mom, dad, and mine. It is behind me. It's the one in my previous picture (let it snow let it snow) with the R in the foreground. God bless.
