Gentlemen; Any suggestions on purchasing airline tickets. Where is a good place, Expedia etc.??? Or should I just deal with the major airlines? I am not looking for the elcheapo flight but just a decent place online that will provide tickets for a decent price. All domestic flights, not overseas. Thanks

I take 30-40 flights a year, mostly for work. I usually look at expedia or travelocity first just to see who goes there and what the competing fares are. Then I go to the airline web site to make my reservations. I just prefer to deal direct with that airline rather than a 3rd party. The fare is actually $5 less on the airline site since expedia and travelocity charge $5 for their service.

My mom and dad went to London this summer and used travelocity.com and seemed to get a good price. We looked to see what they had to offer and what flights with whom was available, checked others and then airline direct, they got the best deal at travelocity. Maybe an international flight is diffferant, but, that is where they had best luck.

If Southwest flies from your airport they will be the cheapest. I have flown on every major carrier and am the most pleased with Southwest. No frills, just flights. I did purchase a roundtrip ticket from Nashville to Maui in Sept. for only $625 on Delta's site. Not bad for naming the times that I wanted to travel...

My experience is that most any of the sites (yahoo, orbitz, expedia) will have all of the same flights and will tell you the relative costs of the flights. Once you figure out which flight you want, you can usually save a couple of dollars by going directly to the airline's webpage.

I only fly once or twice a year, but when I do I found that pricing on the airline web page (I use AA) is about the cheapest. But you have to do a little work trying different dates. It's usually cheaper to fly in the middle of the week than on or near the weekend. The number of days you stay also makes a difference. Number of layovers. And of course the earlier, usually the better. Also call the airline and price them that way also. Sometimes their prices are different. Prices change all the time, nothing is really set. You may have to travel to a different airport to get a better deal. Another thing to think about is some airports have free parking. Expedia and the others I tried were sometimes 10-50+ dollars higher. They may be able to get better last minute prices?? Search around. Some other airlines offer special packages and other permotions. Possibly split a cupon book of tickets if you are with a group.

Check out ATA.com had good luck with them, and also where are you planning on leaving from sometimes it's cheaper to drive 100 miles which we do to catch planes out of ST Louis.

Like everything else, it depends...

I start out with one of the major independent sites, usually travelocity.com. That gives me an idea of the most I should have to spend, and some of the airlines that cover the route. Then I start looking in earnest.

orbitz.com is usually my next stop. The same tickets at orbitz are usually cheaper than travelocity, because orbitz is owned by the airlines. I'll also check the airlines own sites. Of course some airlines like Southwest only publish their fares on their own sites.

If the destination is a resort area (or if I'm starting from a resort area), I'll check with a travel agent. This is where they can really save you money, because the travel agents can offer you deals that you won't find anywhere else. It's not uncommon to get a round-trip flight from Detroit to Honolulu for 600 bucks, maybe with a rental car thrown in.

Also, don't forget to check nearby airports. You can sometimes save a couple hundred bucks by driving a hundred miles.

Warning about purchacing tickets on line. My wife was in Kuwait and I was gonna go stay with her. I tried to get tickets on line, they routed me through Lebonon. There was a 24 hour lay over but what they forgot to tell me was I was suppose have a visa to stay over 4 hours in Lebonon. I could have been in big trouble, for kicks I ran it through my normal travel agent, the tickets were cheaper, and I only had a four hour lay over in Amsterdam, a lot safer place for Americans.

I'm keeping an eye on Southwest Airlines website hoping to pick up a bargain. Lucky for me they fly where I want to go. Pretty hard to beat them.
You might try Priceline.com or Hotwire.com. There's probably others.
Southwest only sells their own. They don't deal with priceline, etc.
