This past weekend, my parents farmhouse was burglarized while they were out....my dad messed up and left no lights left on in house and had went out...he usually leaves lights on as a deterent.

The thiefs (2 of them) went around the section in their truck and drove back into a neighbors field and then walked on foot 3/4 mile through a corn field and a wheat field to get to the house. They came in the back way...we could track their prints back to the field. Parents found muddy shoe prints in house still wet when they got home....took a good deal of cash and old coins..... .what can a person do? This is in NorthWest Ohio - and this usually doenst happen in the area..but seems a lot more lately...what is this world coming too! How can we track these punks down? Any ideas?

I live in south eastern Ontario Canada and there has been an increasing amount of daytime breakins as the local population out in the country has grown. It is kind of scary to see this going on you just hope it doesn't happen to you. I have always had somekind of dog and do think this helps. My German Shepherd pup 9 months old and about 85 pounds spends his time during the day in his pen or lose running around if somebody is outside to watch him. Now if everybody is gone away he goes in the house and spends night in the house. I would like to see a stranger come in even at his young age he is leary of strangers, with nobody home or somebody comming in at night I don't think they would get far. In Canada we have strict gun laws, I do have a couple but have the licence for them but they have to be locked in a case, have trigger locks, amunition locked seperate from guns. So if going to follow the law a gun is no protection in a hurry here but a good dog is the best defence. If a bad guy comes snooping around a house and hears a dog, or if has been watching houses to pick one to break into they will probably pass on tangling with a dog. In Canada judges are very soft on this usless garbage that go stealing, why not try working. Give them probation and let them do it all again. I probably would get a bigger fine and more probation if got caught without a gun locked up the way it is suppose to be. Don't think it matters if in USA or Canada crime is a growing problem and judges are getting softer got to be a way to change things, anybody got any ideas how?

Had an experience a little over a year ago some of you may remember my postings about the peeping tom. I learned a lot since then. I added a yard light to the property and motion sensors on all the outside lights to the house. We had a security system in the house, I added one to my pole barn myself ($100 from X10.com and it works well). Also added security cameras (from X10.com) and a security VCR to record from the cameras. Also a deer/trail camera outside in case the guy comes back I want a good photo of him. The best advice I was given is to put out a lot light (motion sensor lights) and some noise (security system alarm). Somebody determined to break in your house will, but they won't stay long if they have lights and a security system going off, they'll grab the obvious stuff and leave. Most of us in the country enjoy our open space and a little elbow room, it's too bad there are creeps out there that are using that against us.

How'd you come out on the peeper? in reply to JeffE, 12-15-2004 12:36:14
As I remember, you gave chase, and didn't catch the culprit - and the local enforcement agency showed little interest until you went to the media, right? How did things progress from there? Did the cops find him? Did they even try? Have you had any more trouble with him? I suspect your giving chase scared him off, and he's looking for greener pastures elswhere! Updates????

X-10 also used to offer a dialer to go with their panel which would dial the number(s) you program and give a recorded message. This saves the monthly cost of central station monitoring that alarm companies sell but needs to go to a neighbor rather than the local police who, in my area, have a normal 45 minute response time anyway.

Electronics are the best answer. I also installed a driveway sensor as we have ½ mile of driveway and little likelihood of anybody walking in.

Sad to say but nothing will ever stop a detrmined thief! There are few ways to catch them in the act now days though . Video camera setups are getting pretty cheap, best thing i found is remote deer trail cameraa ,,hav efew of them placed around my cabin and woods , barn, etc . Cheaper ones are round $50 anymore. Date and time stamp on pics . Have gotta lots of grea tpics of critters ,two and four legged . Make sure to hide camera , and wouldn't hurt to have it secured somehow so they don;t walk off or damage it if found .

Sounds like someone who knows your parents and the area. We live in an adult retirement community, where anyone under 55 is suspect. People are quick to call the police and get them checked out, especially after someone's grandson came to visit and committed a couple burglaries while he was here. We try not to keep anything of value in our house. TV and stereo are old, no money in the house, no guns, and I made all of our furniture of my own special designs that they couldn't fence, etc.

Someone stole my good hand tools about 12 years ago, so I replaced them with cheap tools of lesser value. They could enter, but the neighbors are very watchful and what they could cart off probably wouldn't be worth the effort.

A few years ago here, there was a run of B& E's in our area. A local detective noticed that the crimes were committed during the day. He got attendance reports from the local schools, and correlated the absenteeism to the crime. Then it was a matter of watchung those individuals. It took about a week. They confessed to 42 burglaries! The police said that isn't unusual. Frequently it is a neighbor kid or even a relative. A friend of mine had an extensive gun collection stolen by his own son, who had drug problems. Another had his property stolen by his ex wife's kids. ( Not his kids ) Thieves usually aren't total strangers. Irv

the best deterent to prevent alot of these breakins is having a big dog. they dont have to be mean but just having one will help, it does help if they are big. mine is over 200lds then there is the attack cat in the house. at least that is what i call it. it attacks anything or anyone except of course the wife. thats her nice kiddy as she calls it, i it call other things.

Since they took some "old coins", you can alert area coin dealers as to the amount and type of coins taken. Most dealers will be more than happy to help get these guys, and the crooks will be at one of the dealers, trying to sell the silver or whatever. Hope they get caught quick.....Stan

As long as the local dealer isn't a "front" for them.

That's the way I view pawn shops....outlets for stolen goods. (My opinion and you aren't gonna change it so youuns that wanna jump me forget it.)

I agree on Pawn Shops..... Most of the power tools sold at them are ripped off from plants & construction jobs, I have heard guys brag about it. Flea Markets are another fence for stolen goods. I will not buy things that I think are stolen. If no one would buy stolen items, it would really slow down thefts.

I am gonna jump on this, but I am doing it to agree with you. There are just too mny high dollar itmes in a pawn shop to prove to me that they are not a fence for stolen property.

I wish there was something I could say to help you feel better cause I have had things stolen
too.

If you go by the numbers those 2 will spend the
rest of their lives in and out of prison. Out of
all the inmates released from prison 80% will be
back within 6 months and only 2% will never ever
come back. I can also tell you that they will learn to be wifes to the bigger inmates.

Dont worry about them getting caught, I"ll bet
they already have a police record. If they
dont get convicted on this case, they will get
locked up for something else they did.

I"ll never understand these criminals, it seems to me that they would make more money with a real
job then they would make stealing like this. In the past they have caught theives when they
brag to everyone about their crimes. I wouldnt
be suprised if one got mad at the other one and
turned his buddy in. tony

Have not had a firearms owner ID card in years, do not hunt any more. My guns have been sitting in the closet unused. I applied for the FOID card last week, need shotgun shells, we have had things dissappear recently, I guess it is time to protect what belongs to ME.

JT, Please fill this Texan in on what a firearms owners ID card is. Also what is a FOID card? Where are you located? I sure don't mean to sound like a smart *** but this is all new to me. We don't have to have any ID or card except if we have a Concealed Handgun License. Can buy shells as long as you are over 21 and a gun with a 5 day waiting period. If you have a CHL (Concealed Handgun License) there is no wait to get a gun as you have already passed the background check. One strange thing about the CHL is I can go into a gunshop with a police officer and I can buy a gun and walk out. If he don't have a CHL he has to wait the 5 days.

Yes a FOID card is a ID card with a picture on it, you pay 5.00 for the card, send an application to the Illios State Police and they do a background check of some sort, kinda trying to keep criminals from legally owning a gun. It is kinda of a joke, the try to keep crazy peopla and criminals from having guns, but I have never seen a criminal own a gun legally anyway. The only thing it does is if I were to purchase a gun, they tie my FOID number, name and the seriel, model of the gun together.

FOID= firearms owners identification ? Illinois law perhaps? Required for purchase of guns, ammunition, hunting licenses. Basicly a criminal background check ID card. Felony for false card- keeps students from faking ID cards for drinking. RN.

Here's an article from a local newspaper...(NE SD, where things like this aren't suppose to happen either!)
Posted on Dec. 09, 2004 "Eighteen charged in Aberdeen break-ins...
Teens entered home several times; stole up to $4,000

Eighteen Aberdeen juveniles face burglary charges for repeatedly breaking into an Aberdeen home.
All of the teenage boys have been already charged in juvenile court, according to Rachel Wilkins, a deputy state's attorney for Brown County. Much of her caseload involves juvenile crimes.
If convicted, the teens face anything from probation to serving time under the state Department of Corrections.
Wilkins said the juveniles broke into the same Aberdeen residence numerous times before being caught in late October. They stole between $3,000 and $4,000 in cash. All of the burglaries were committed in daylight, Wilkins said...."

Well, you probably can look in your local area - this sounds like an "inside" job. They probably knew of your parents habits - cars parked in yard, when thy are gone and not, that sort of thing... Not much you can do except lock up tightly, and take whatever security measures you can afford. Hopefully, someone's mouth will get out of control some nite in the back of the bar, and the cops will be able to fit the puzzle together. Most likely the culprits are nearby. Anyone unexpected visit lately - like casing the place when your folks were there? Unfortunately, living in the country is not any longer a measure of protection. Crime has moved out here too.

Hey I like that it sure puts the point home. Them signs would make a person think.
About 10 years back my dad had a good chain and a few tools go missing. Have a good idea it was the neighbours kid that did it but never had any proof. The kid did end up doing time a few times so guess he did get his in the long run but does suck not to be able to trust neighbours kids. I think a lot of parents are too lax now days and kids are raised too lazy, expect everything givin to them don't want to work for anything.

We had kids next door that never washed their hands--everything they touched stuck to them! I was looking for my cutting torch one day out back in my garage--gone! Asked my son, he said Matt from next door was hangin' around one day. So, i went to Matt's home and found my cutting torch laying under a cabinet on the floor. When Matt got his drivers license, he stole a neighbors convertible and drove it to Arizona, where he promptly got caught! So, his brother decided he'd take up the slack. He tried to jimmy the man door on my garage. I wasn't sure he did it, but when i asked him about it, he wouldn't look at me when he denied it! Now, my outside doors have secret ways to lock them, and steel stiffeners where the jambs could be split off! And, there's a sign in the window about this property being protected by Smith and Wesson! And a sign from a company that provides protection, stuck in the hedges. And, lights all around the house on "trips"! Also, a .45 cal. bb gun lays out in plain sight! At 20 feet, it looks like the real thing! (My wife uses it to discourage those thievin' squirrels!) by: RJ
