My less than 5 year old torpedoe type heater quit working. I opened it up and found the ignitor wasn't functioning, should be a simple fix, just go to the farm store where I bought it and get the part I need and fix it. WRONG, farm store does not stock any parts, and didn't even seem willing to order. OK, I'll find it somewhere else, 2nd farm store, same brand of heater, nope they don't carry parts, and refuse to order. Make a third stop, They look it up in the John Day catalog, make a phone call, only to be told that part is obsolete. OK, now I'm starting to steam. Find a website for the distributor of the heater, after trying 4 times and waiting 15 minutes for the website to load each time, I gave up. One more choice, contacted Grainger, still don't know if I will have any luck, but at least they are trying. Oh, in case any of you are wondering, the heater in question is a Reddy-Heater brand. I strongly recommend NOT buying one of this brand.

Unless you want to restore that heater to original condition, just rig up a spark plug or two for the ignitor. I've got an old Sears brand that came from the factory that way, works fine.

The ignitor in mine is more like a glow rod, not a spark plug.

Question..... .What did you’ll burn in them. I burn road diesel in one I have had for several years (50,000 BTU Ready Heater) but, have told friends and they claim the diesel will not burn in theirs. I also have a old kerosine, I think they called them KeroSun, heater (without fan and C batt. ignition) that I bought at auction for a couple a bucks. I have run about 5 gal. of diesel thur it with no problems yet. Does anyone see a problem with using diesel in these heaters. Easier to find than kerosine and not as cosily..... ..thanks..... ....E. E.RAY, I have been burning #1 diesel in mine ever since it was new, it works very good, with only minimal bad smell. I have lived in houses with oil burning furnaces that smelled worse.

Hey Rusty, look at the tag on the side of your heater, I'll almost bet it says DESA International on it somewhere. DESA is the mfg for 90% of the heaters out there nowdays no matter what name is finally put on them. There should be an 800 number with their name, if not post again and I'll get it for you off one of my heaters. I've ordered stuff in the past directly from them to fix the heaters we have around here, and they are very reasonable as far as prices go for the parts.

Yes, I did visit the DESA website, it is the one that I had major problems with. Very slow to respond and very sluggish, plus I could not find any place on the site where I could order parts.

We Have about 5 Reddy Heaters that we use in our shop and in or milk parlor. We had one of the small ones and we didn"t like it too well it didn"t last long. As far as the big ones go as long as we keep clean fuel in them the only thing we do is keep the filters changed. All of the big stores that sell them around here don"t carry parts either. We have to go to a little shop about 50 miles from home to get any work done. But they are reasonable. Well thats my .02 for the day Have a good One JC

Hey Rusty, Are those heaters not a pain in rear end to keep going, I bought a small 40,000 BTU torpedo heater back when Stow Hardware in Kansas City was closing out that been at least 15 years ago, last winter I was using it and all of a sudden it poped the reset and never could get it to reset so I trouble shot it and found it to be the reset, I thought no big deal I'll go to Tractor Supply and get a new reset switch, HA HA HA, so I thought Grainger for sure could get it HA HA HA HA, then I went Hertz Rental (they rent them) HA HA HA HA HA HA, Last resort, Went to United Rentals here in Springfield, MO. I had the switch in hand, the guy looked at it asked what make and model (I was waiting for the same crap) but to my suprise he said I'm out of that certain one but I'll order one on have it for you tommorow, So if you have a United Rental Store near you try them, These guys were really great help even had a air intake filter in stock.

Now there's a thought, if Grainger doesn't come through, I'll give it a shot.

I had a similar problem back in the 70"s. I went to a reagular heating and air conditioning supply guy. The ignitor you need should be a common item for an old oil/kerosene furnace. Might be worth a try. The one I got worked but I had to modify the mounting bracket a little. Hope this helps.

Back in the seventies we could do things like that, it's a whole different ball game today. Everybody wants to sell the product, but nobody wants to service it.

Rusty Farmall..
You might want to try this link:
Link

You MUST know what model heater you have..A quick look at some igniters ahow them to be EXPENSIVE!! I would make sure that there is definitely an igniter problem first.

My Model 70 heater is 3 years old and the local hardware store has 1/4 of a wall of parts. Just picked up a filter kit for mine.

Regards, Jack

From one Rusty to another Rusty: I had the same problem with my Reddy heater! So, i removed the top cover. Ignitor sparked, spark plug worked, gap was correct, great spark, fuel came out of the injector, replaced the filter, changed the fuel hose out of the tank, cleaned the spark plug, motor runs, fan turns--i thought it was good! Well, i finally got it to run again, really good. Tried it once in a while, all summer! But, decided to buy a new one when they went on sale! During the fall sale time, i tried it. It ran really great-heated the garage up well! Decided to not buy a new one! Guess what--sale over--plug in heater, only runs slowly, and quits after 1 minute time, and won't do anything more! GRRRR! And, the new ones are much higher in price! Probably have to get a new one! One question--can i by-pass the part that shuts off the current in the box? Can't remember what it is called--has a push button to turn it back on--keeps popping out! by: Rustyj
