A quick question: Whenever I see used bulldozers for sale, every ad seems to mention "Undercarraige 70%, or undercarraige 60%, or some percentage thereof. What exactly does undercarraige refer to, and what does 60% mean?, That 60% of the steel that makes up the underside of the dozer has been abraded away?
Please let me know. Thanks!!

That is the amount of steel left in the sprockets, pins, etc. If you are considering buying one register at ironplanet.com and watch the postings. They have an inspection service check everything including a chemical analysis of the fluids.

Undercarriage repair is always $$$$ flying, not walking out of your pocketbook!!

Never got into the tracked stuff myself but one of my friends did and found out the hard way (as in dollars) that repairing or replacing that stuff can get pretty expensive.

Andrew: Undercarriage refers to the moving (or wearing) parts of a dozer's track system. If you are dealing with a major-brand dozer (Cat, JD, Komatsu, etc.) there are published tables that explain the allowable wear of each component. In most cases, this is much less than the total thickness of the part (example: a pin may be 50% worn with only 10% of its diameter ground off). Warning: while measuring each component and determining the percentage of wear is the best method, many sellers "guesstimate" the wear percentage and use that number in their advertisements. Needless to say, this number is nearly meaningless, and for some strange reason it almost invariably errs on the "optimistic" side. Unless you know the seller to be a person of excellent integrity and mechanical ability, treat any advertised undercarriage wear percentage with a healthy dose of skepticism.

Man, You Got that right. Put a 60% undercarrage to work on a grade and the poketbook will get to the bottom of the grade before the dozer will.

That is the percentage of pins, sprockets, idlers, rails and track that is left from new.

As said above your taking dollars, dollars and more dollars if you don’t know what you are doing I would suggest finding someone that has a good amount of experience to help you decide if you are going to purchase one. For an explain if the track link is 5.18 (5 3/16”) high when new and when the link was wore down to 4.78 (4 3/8”) that would equal 100% ware which is only 7/16 “ not much.
