This morning i went out to blow out the drive way since we had about 6" of snow lastnight. While I was cleaning the tractor off I relized I forgot to put the cap back on the tank two days ago. I had the tractor running lastnight and nothing happened but as soon as I relized there was snow in the thank I shut the tractor off. What do I do now? Should I fill the tank up and put some fuel anti-freeze in or what? Kind of hard to drain this tank. Help me please. Steve

About 10" of snow = an inch of rain. Did you get a lot of snow? If only a couple inches fell right on the tank opening it would be about the same problem as fueling your tractor in a sprinkle. The cap opening is so small a hole that you probaly get more water in your fuel due to condensation. I doubt you will have any trouble unless you really went out of your way to shove snow in your tank.

Steve: For the most part you are not getting great advice. Alcohol based additives are great and will turn the snow to water. However water in fuel only settles out after tractor has been parked for awhile. The time to drain any moisture away is each morning before tractor is disturbed. I am not familiar with that make but check for drains on filters as well as tank.

I used to run 150 gal. tank on back of pickup for refueling tractors in field. Those tanks were always a problem as you got condensation but never heat like tractor tank creating evaporation. I always told my guys, fuel tractors after pickup has been parked for a few hours and always take tractor to the pickup. Ocasionally I would park pickup on hill so drain was low. Next morning I would drain off moisture.

Water has to settle in fuel before you can drain it off. I rather doubt you have enough moisture in that tank to give immediate problems any how as long as you add the alcohol.

People do tend to over react when fuel and other caps are left off, exhaust systems left uncovered, etc. I would almost guarentee if nothing above deflects a stream into opening, you will never get enough over night to cause any problem. Air currents over open hole like those I mentioned tend to deflect rain or snow.

Thanx Hugh i think im going to take the tank off in a day or so once the snow stops blowing and drain the tank right out. I know there was water in there in the beginnin of winter when it started getting cold but though i had that problem fixed. Thanx again Steve

Don't worry about this diesel draws moisture when it's cold anyway ,just keep fuel treated and tank full all the time and open tank and filter drains at end of each use and you will have no problems

Steve

Go the the local truck stop and pick up some anti-gell/fuel dryer. It is a common problem for truckers to have water in the fuel. BTW. Even with the cap off you didn't get much snow in the tank. Been there done that, tractor is still running with no ill affects.

You didn't say what make or model of tractor, but most diesel tractors have a drain plug in the bottom of the tank to check for watwr in the fuel.Open the drain until only fuel comes out.You are probably not talking about much water.6" of snow would only amount to about a half inch of water. Not really very much considering the size of the fuel tank opening. Most diesel fuel tanks also have a standpipe that draws the fuel out so I doubt you have enough water to even be picked up by the fuel pump.

So you got water in the tank. How do you drain the fuel filters? How much snow came down? I would drain the fuel filters at every opportunity until no more water came out. Next spring drain the whole tank real good when the weather was co-operating. I saw a guy pour a beer in the fuel tank of a big international during a tractor pull. Had enough filter to hold it up. Not that I would recommend doing that though.

So what your saying is to start the tractor and open the drain on the fuel filters? Im not sure how much snow got in but I know theres enough to kill the tractor in there and i dont need that hassel again.

Don't know what kind of tractor you have, but I would NOT open the fuel filter drain while the tractor was running..... ..

It will have to be warm enough for the snow to melt before you can drain it.
