I just found out about this oil. Is it OK to run year round in my gas and diesel equipment. What about using it in final drives and transmissions. Where I live it can reach -45F in winter to 100F in summer. I'm still looking for outlet port cover for a Massey Ferguson 220 Industrial Backhoe attachment I just bought (MF#1400582M1 Plate, Cover). If I can't find that part I will have to change the whole valve bank and my "good deal" just became a not-so-good deal.
Thanks

You may want to flush all engines first to clean all the gunk out you can 1st. SYN oil will clean all dirt and sludge and put in pan and oil will get dirty real fast and you will need to change more often until they get cleaned. You will know when it's needs changed it will start using oil when it's dirty.

Probibly yes. What brand oil and what brand diesel engines? Take care choosing synthetic oil, untill very recently, only Mobil 1 and Amsoil were genuine synthetic oil made from synthetic base stock. Some oil companies use mineral oil base stock refined by a special process and call it synthetic oil. Mobil took em to court over that one,but was not able to stop them from marketing this stuff as synthetic oil. My experience is with Mobil 1 synthetic oil. I run 0-30 in all my gas engine stuff in the temperature range you describe. The stuff has worked out well at high or low temps and at very high loads. Mobil 1 makes synthetic atf,GL5 gear oil, steering fluid and motor oil in various weights 0-20,0-30,0-40,5-20,5-30,10-30,10-40,15-50 and more. I have used the gear oil in rear ends and manual transmissions with good results, especially in cold weather. My Shelbourne Reynolds stripper header says to ONLY use Mobil 1 synthetic gear oil in it's gear boxes.
Check your operators manuals to see what spec oil your diesel engines need. You should find what you need in a Mobil 1 oil or a Mobil Delvac 1 oil. I was really sold on 0-30 Mobil 1 when I found I could hear the oil slosh around when I shook a jug at -10F.

Hi Jon H,

I think I found it on their web site but what they said about their 0-XX viscosity syn is that it basically doesn"t solidify. So there's your lower temp limit. They just put the 0 on the container as they had to put something.

Course the other end (30, 40, or 50) means that it retains the viscosity of those oils at the hotter temps as you know.

Sounds like a real deal. I have however, noticed on testing (shown on the same site) that big engine mfgrs (Cat Cummins Mack) give passing grades to the 15-50 on tests that the 10-30 fails so there is still some quirk to holding the hot vis.

I"m in Texas and just mix 1 and Delvac (20-80%) 15w-50/40 in everything but air cooled where I use straight syn. Also use the blended syn gear lube when I can. On really cold days you can feel some sluggishness in starting but not too bad.

Mark

The oil I'm refering to is Shell Rotella T 100% SB 0W40. We don't have Mobil products in this neck of the woods. Machines under consideration for year round installation include: Caterpillar D2, ASV with Isuzu Diesel Engine, Dodge Diesel truck, Jeep 6 cyl gas, Honda 450 ES Quad, John Deere 410 Diesel Backhoe,Ford 4 cyl. industrial Diesel, etc.

Thanks

SB in the oil spec I suspect means synthetic blend. These blends are a mixture of usually 50% synthetic oil and 50% mineral oil. They are a good fit for diesel engines. You get most of the benifit of pure synthetic oil along with the lower cost and ability to suspend more black diesel crud than pure synthetic. With the lower cost you can afford to change blend oil oftener than with pure synthetic. Check the API oil spec for your diesel engines, should be somthing like CC-CD-CF. If the Shell oil meets or exceeds this spec ,you should be good to go.

 I use 0-40 in a tractor in reply to PEEDEE, 12-11-2004 11:19:32
I use 0-W40 in my Belarus chore tractor. It sure spins over easy in the winter. I leave it in year round too. The stuff I buy I believe is made by Esso/Exxon.

Hey Hayman,

Are you in Sannich or in the Vic area.

What model Belarus do you have and what do you think of it.

Grant

I'm out in western Canada.

I have a 825 belarus with cab, loader and mfd. Back when I was shopping for a used 70-80 hp mfd loader/chore tractor with cab on it the few year old Belarus's were by far the better deal. They wanted double or more for a 20 year old used domestic with lots of hrs compared to this 825.

I've had it now 7 years already and its been a real handy utlity tractor to have around the farm. Problem is I don't have a/c so when it comes to field work like baling my drivers don't care to drive it on hot days! I really didn't buy for a field tractor. However we use it more it seems for haying running a 3rd baler and sometimes cutting hay when the other 2 tractors are tied up baling or something. Heck it pulls a 16ft disc too not bad but again I got 2 nicer more comfy tractors to drive for field work before I'll take out the Belarus! It has some good idea's on it and some wierd ones. I like the feature to shift the Hydraulic pump out of gear. Don't need that running all day for nothing when baling.

I was skeptical at first but after the first week we had it exceeded my expectations so I'm happy with it. Like I mentioned it's not my main tractor and it only gets around 150hrs a year on it. I think I have close to 3000 hrs on it now or there abouts. The way it runs I'll never wear it out at 150hrs a year. I've had to fix a few things on if over the years but nothing out of ordinary when it comes to farm machinery. Parts have never been a problem so far.
