Has anyone seen or heard of a 6V battery having solenoid unit on it that starts at 12V and than runs at 6V,or is this like a left-handed monkey wrench. It is a good idea.

A friend of mine had one of those solenoid's on his Farmall M.

I think I have a NOS one that came in a box of parts I bought at a auction.

Saw a posting aobut that a while back, but didn't keep it. It was however on one of the classic car sites. There were 2 different versions. 1 used a relay and two batteries (or a single battey with a center tap) and the other was all contained in the battery. The self contained one had been discontinued at that time.

I'd think a single bigger battery would be a better option. Just less overall areas for problems....

Back in the 60s we had a snow plow Jeep that had a system that could start and run at 12 volts or pull a swithch and it would start at 24 volts then push the switch back in to run and charge at 12 volts. The jeep had 2 batteries each 12 volts. I think the system worked well but plowing was hard on the Jeep and the only time it was driven was for plowing and then the weather was cold. This Jeep also had a belt driven hydraulic pump. If I remember correctly the 12 / 24 volt switch was called a "MONDACK UNIT" but I am not sure of the spelling. I hope this helps you.

Hi Ed,

Yep, and I've seen 'em start on 24 and run 12 too. Didn't those old 5020 JD's have that?

Yes, quite a few of the new generation Deeres did that. Unfortunately, many people didn't maintain the system properly ansd few took the time to fully understand how it worked.

The old 10 and 20 series diesel JD's started and ran on 24 volt. The downfall of the system was that they center tapped the 24 volts to run 12V accessories with no good system to balance the load between the two 12V batteries. This usually led to one battery being overcharged while the other was undercharged shortning the life of both. JC Whitney still sells the crank on 12V,run/charge on 6V relay. Seems to me the brand was somthing like orpin? I still have the one I used on an old 6V Jeep 30 years ago. They did work, but result in a nest of battery cables to series/parallel connect two batteries.

The diesel electric start two cylinders, all 10 series Waterloo diesels and 20 series diesels to the end of the 1968 model year. They used a 24/12V system but no relay took two pairs of 6V batteries out of parallel where they normally would be for charging. And line the batteries up in series for 24V just for starting. I don't know where this story keeps coming from? However it's the system Deere should have used. The Deere 24V systems used a 10 or 18 amp 24V generator which is isolated entirely from the tractor frame and separate + and (-) cables run from it back to the batteries. The starter also was also totally isolated from the chassis and only gets it's 24V + and - from the two heavy cables feeding it.
